Intermittent P0709 code - AUTOMATIC TRANS RANGE SENSOR R&R??

Within the last 2 months our 2016 Ford Edge SEL(3.5L V6, 140K miles), has had 2 instances where it appears to briefly go into limp mode - no power and max 35 mph. Both times after restart it acted normally. My $95 Tech diag is below which isn't anything more than my cheap (Autozone) scan tool told me.

I'm unsure of my realistic options other than to drive it until it acts up so I have a few questions if you would please. It's my wife's car and I don't want her stranded somewhere. Diagrams of the trans, schematics and the like would be also appreciated.

  1. I was told it will not damage the transmission if we continue to drive this. Agree? Fluid was check and was acceptable wear/color. Fluid level ok.
  2. Is there a low(er) cost scan tool (FORScan?)/program & ODB link cable that I can run to monitor the output of this sensor and determine if it's providing acceptable/correct data? I don't want to just throw 1/3 the price of a new tranny at it so I don't mind spending a few bucks for a decent scan tool.
  3. Is 5 hrs. the book job on this? Where is the switch located? I was told in the pan and also under the air box
  4. Anything else you can gather from the notes below would be appreciated.

DIAGNOSE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CUSTOMER HAD CODE SCAN DONE SOMEWHERE AND THERE WAS A PRINT OUT IN THE CAR. THAT HAD P0706. I FOUND A P0709 AND TONS OF INVALID DATA RECEIVED FROM PCM CODES. ALL CODES IN HISTORY AT THIS TIME. IVE SEEN THIS BEFORE AND IT CAN BE INTERMITTENT. THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE VEHICLE WILL NOT START IF THIS ACTS UP. EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE WORKING CURRENTLY.

***RECOMEND TO GET THIS TO ACT UP AND PERFORM TESTING ON IT BEFORE WE GO ANY FURTHER, JUST MY SUSPICION AS I HAVE SEEN THIS SENSOR BE INTERMITTENT BEFORE. AUTOMATIC TRANS RANGE SENSOR R&R****SPECIAL TOOLS LISTED IN TECH NOTES. THESE TOOLS MAY MAKE THE JOB GO MUCH SMOOTHER TO GET THE ROLL PIN OUT, I HAVE DONE IT BEFORE WITHOUT, JUST NOT ALOT OF SPACE TO WORK.  Labor: $584   Parts: $463

Well... a bit surprised that there are +100 views to this post and no comments. I guess not that common of an issue which may be good I guess. So I ordered the ODBLink, downloaded FOREScan and will use that to read the value of the sensor and post results here.

Since it is intermittent, I would start with the wiring to the transmission, look for bad pins, cracked wires, etc. The TRS is internal to the 6F50, and its connector inside the transmission connects to the main connector. Yes, it would be a lot in labor as you have to drain the transmission, gain access to the top of the transmission, remove the pan, cooler pipe (I think this might be different for different years), TSS, OSS, main control (valve body), and the specialty tools. I would guess 5 hours labor, I think the parts cost is high since an OEM TRS is $90, and the gaskets and filter needed are $350 (the rest of that parts quote).
