ASL1125
Howdy. My Edge runs great and has 111k miles. Does my 3.5 have direct FI, port FI or both? A pro mechanic said a high ratio of the earlier Ford engines with direct FI develop moderate to severe carbon build-up on the back side of the intake valves. The only solution is to blast the offending carbon with walnut media, a process I can only imagine is quite costly. IIRC he said one of the symptoms is rough running in cold weather; I am pretty sure he mentioned other symptoms I cannot recall. My Edge ran and idled like a top last winter in 0 degrees F, even right after starting. Interestingly, IIRC he also had a Mazda 3.5 V6 in the shop, said to be the same updated 3.5 engine in some Fords, with direct (high pressure) and port (low pressure) FI. The Mazda was only a few years old with over 100k miles; that engine needed the walnut media blasting though the wrench said it had less carbon buildup than the earlier 3.5 with direct FI only. Viewers could see the carbon build-up behind the intake valves.

Thank you kindly for a side order of good news with my oatmeal this morning! I purchased my Edge this past January; overall, this is my all-time favorite 4-wheel vehicle; the Goldilocks dimensions are great. Sport wagons have long been my favorite, having past owned a gorgeous steel metallic 2005 Saab 9-5 Aero Sport Wagon w/2.5T, 265hp/260 lb-ft, 5-speed A/T (let off @ 137mph indicated w/plenty of steam on tap, stable as a rock.) Buick's Regal TourX 4-cyl. turbo wagon caught my attention, presuming it weighs at least 200# less than my Edge, then I saw the Regal is 175# heavier! Still like TourX's appearance and functionality but both the weight and engine service issues damp my interest. I presume the carbon build-up issue on the intake valves of Gen 1 2.0L turbo EcoBoost engines is widely known, likely correlating to about $3500 lower resale value on vehicles with that engine vs. my Duratec V6. Still kind of ticks me off my V6 has 25 lb ft less torque. BTW, pure ethanol-free dyno-fuel increased fuel economy and boosted hp by about 20- ethanol is crime if you asked me! This Edge drives only about 4k miles annual now; I likely keep it for 4 years at which time it shall have about 127k miles. The known highest-risk engine service issue appears to be that of the internal water pump seal leaking coolant into the crankcase and subsequent potential need for engine replacement. Is there any other preventative check beyond looking for coolant on the garage floor? Is it worth it to pay my wrench to check for leaks on his lift twice per year? He's independent w/reasonable fees and 100% honest. Any other major risks I should know about and if yes, what are warning signs/preventative steps? THANK YOU!
