Windshield Replacement

Recommended Posts

With the weather forecast change tomorrow is also a bike day, so I just took it through the car wash and zero leaks.

Now just waiting to see if @Haz can help with instructions to remove the trim piece so that I can attach the loose plastic clip, and be done with Safelite for good.

Last week my windshield was damaged by a rock on the same road I71 and I used the Erie insurance app on my phone to initiate a replacement.

The Erie app steers you to SafeLite for the replacement but I went with Rite-Way after my past experience with SafeLite.

The installer arrived at my home this morning and I noticed it was non-OEM glass made in China, so I put it on hold.

It sounds like the insurance limits the cost to around $800 and requires special approval if it exceeds that amount - I'm waiting to hear back from them on that, but looks like I might need to pay in to go with OEM glass.

The OEM glass itself is about $300. (Example). Is labor that much?

Got a call early this morning confirming that the installer is on his way with an OEM windshield.

It's installed and the installer just left after taking it on the road for the camera calibration and when I turned on the car it gave a warning that the calibration still needs to be done - he's on his way back with his Autel device.

The installer pointed out that the chrome retainer for the rain sensor was missing - obviously lost by AutoLite - @Haz could you help with a part number for this retaining clip?

Wondering if I should try the recalibration with Forscan - is that even possible?

Thanks @Haz

As I walked out to my driveway when the installer returned I found the metal clip that he was adamant wasn't installed - he apologized.

We spent a long time on the phone with Autel and their response was that they've got to install a new windshield because the mirror/camera mounting must be wrong.

I prompted that we repeat the calibration process using the Autel because I suspected that he did not follow the procedure correctly previously - after about 10 to 15 minutes on the road the fault on the dash cleared and the Autel said calibration completed successfully.

See photo of the rain sensor clip installed.

Heads up display is a electronic module that projects an image onto the inside of your windshield. It allows to driver to maintain his eyes on the road while subsequently viewing the image. The image itself can contain different information.

For example when Cadillac first fitted their cars with a HUD, it projected a visual image of the road ahead in infrared (allowed the driver to see the road ahead in heavy fog.)

It can contain gauge readings, radio settings, whatever it programmed to project. While useful, it can also be a nuisance.

There are realitively inexpensive aftermarket HUDs available if your interested. For example:

Do you know what the head up display is? Red LEDs in the dash?

I don't know why the Autel listed the HUD seeing as my Sport doesn't have that.

My wife's BMW X5 has the HUD and I like it a lot, and might look at one that that @enigma-2 posted.

The only issue I have with the HUD in my wife's car is that its very difficult to see when wearing polarized sunglasses.

Also her windshield replacement costs a lot more for the HUD version, but that's what we have insurance for.

I have a minor irritation since the last windshield installation - occasionally when I turn on the ignition/start the car the wipers will make one sweep on the clean dry windshield.

The sensor works well to control the wipers when it drizzles or rains, just don't like the sweep on a dry windshield.

I'm guessing that the gel pad on the sensor isn't clean and seated well, so looking at lifting it cleaning it and reseating, or should I just go with a new sensor.

I've always kept the auto rain sensing turned on, and only turn it off for the car wash, but until I get this sorted I leave it off.

Nope, I've always had "courtesy wipe" activated.

On arrival home I took a closer look at the sensor and its got to be the poor install/mount by the roughneck windshield installer.

Now, should I try one of these gel kits at $13 or just go with a new sensor at $40-$50 ???

The service manual states if the gel is damaged to replace the sensor.

I don't have experience, but I would probably be more inclined to replace the sensor and consider the extra $27-$37 as an upcharge as I wouldn't be sure I'll be able to install the gel correctly or the old gel removed fully from the sensor.

Parts ordered - will be a project for the weekend of 1/25

I added the two covers because SafeLite and RiteWay installers butchered them.

Lesson to others, when you have a windshield replacement make sure its OEM glass and not a Chinese knock-off, and make sure all related functions such as lane guidance and rain sensing is in 100% working order.
