Mat9420
I have a 2013 Ford Edge 3.5. Wondering if anyone would know about the symptoms my wife’s car is having. Going down the road yesterday and anywhere between 20mph to 40 mph the rpm’s will jump from around 1500 to 1700/1800 over and over. The car also made noises like going over rumble strips but only during the rpm’s jumping. Almost feels like it’s sluggish and just doesn’t want to get up and go but will power through and clean up after about 40mph. Runs smooth with no noise or hesitation I can tell of after this range or before. Today I changed what PTU fluid I could get out of it and filled it back up with 75w 140. Still has the symptoms but doesn’t seem as bad but only drove it around town. Only seems to really happen if I’m gentle with the gas, if I don’t baby it the rpm jump is subtle but not nearly as bad. I checked the u joints and carrier bearing. The bearing has play but I’m not sure how much is acceptable. PTU fluid was black and smelly but I would like to say it’s pretty much how every other PTU fluid looks that I have seen. Not sure what it could be so any help is appreciated. Mat9420
Pulled PTU out today and tore apart. Everything looks good inside except the race the idler shaft rests in is wore oblong, one side looks good, the opposite is razor thin. The idler shaft also has about a 1/4 to 1/2 mill deep on one side with putting in the groove, other half of the shaft is clean no damage. I’m guessing it was causing the gears to bind but I don’t know for sure.
DILLARD000
How many miles on vehicle+PTU? May be able nurse this PTU along or buy+install a new PTU; your judgement call. Could ieasily Drill+Tap a drain in PTU (assuming it does not have one now) while you've got it out. Recommend a Fumoto DrainValve instead of a basic DrainPlug\Bolt; makes draining that messy GearOil much quicker+cleaner; use a short length of clear tubing directly into a recyle jug. Use premium SevereDuty FullSyn GearOil like AmsOil; personally I mix half+half AmsOil 75w140 + SAE250 GearOil for my 2008 PTU. Also have hydraulic hose running from PTUs TopVent & RightSideFill port, up to a VentFilter & FillCup next to battery under the Hood to ease refilling. Change this GearOil now every 5kMiles\6mths along with engine Oil+Filter. Edited January 9, 2023 by DILLARD000
Mat9420
It has about 160k on the vehicle. I am going to go ahead and replace the PTU the idler shaft has maybe .1 mm before it gets into the case and goes kaboom. I’m thinking of getting the Forman unit since it has a heat shield and drain plug unless Ford has one with a drain in it.
