IM4NC
I have a 14 Edge Sel and have a thumping/rattling sound when going over bumps from the right side. I was told it was a shock so replaced it. Didnt go away. Had it in the shop for another issue and the said samething. Replaced shock again and still have noise. Was told maybe a sway bar link. I added a sound clip of the noise. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Voice 001-1.m4a Edited August 25, 2022 by IM4NC
enigma-2
Sounds like they didn't change the strut bearings. When they get old, the stick. This causes tge spring to "jump" rather than turn with the bearing. Causes this clunk, clunk sound.
IM4NC
I have a front wheel drive. My rear shocks are separate from my Springs I don't have a strut in the back Edited August 28, 2022 by IM4NC
enigma-2
Sorry, misread your post as shock meaning strut. (Duh). It may sound silly, but have you checked is there's anything lose in the spare tire well. I used to carry my trailer hitch ball and bracket back there and had a simular rattle when going over bumps. Possly the spare tire and jack assembly is loose?
IM4NC
Checked that already and nothing loose. I got a sway bar link today. Going to try that tomorrow. Will post results.
IM4NC
Changed the sway bar link and still have noise.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
check speakers and subwoofer, could be an electronic thump or something actually broken
enigma-2
At this point I'd jack up the right rear and start shaking everything. Grab the tire at the top and shake it in and out to test the bearing. Shake to shocks and give the a good yank. Shake everything. Twist the rear axle (if AWD) to test the inner works of the axle. (BTW, you mentioned "shock" singular. Shocks are always changed in pairs).
IM4NC
Yeah I was thinking the same. I did replace both shocks too. Forgot to mention that it was both.

IM4NC
It ended up being a rear sway bar link. After I ran the car for a few days the noise stopped.
jljbtm
so rather than chasing after parts I took it to the dealer to have them investigate for ($69) the mechanic surprised me and said it was the rear shock??? and he can replace them for $500+ after knowing some of you replaced your shocks and struts already to no avail.
IM4NC
I replaced both rear shocks and both rear sway bar links and mine went away. Shocks were $106 for both from Autozone and sway bar links were $38 for both from O'Reillys and replaced myself. Alot less than $500+
enigma-2
1 hour ago, jljbtm said: so rather than chasing after parts I took it to the dealer to have them investigate for ($69) the mechanic surprised me and said it was the rear shock??? and he can replace them for $500+ Ouch. Considering that Motorcraft shocks sell for less than $70/ea and labor is 1 hour, this place is really padding the bill. If it were me, I'd ask for an itemized estimate just to see how they are justifying such a high price. They must be replacing more then just shocks for such a ridiculous quote.
jljbtm
(so i had to ask) I said what if I pay you $500 for two rear shocks and it still rattles well he said both the mechanic and supervisor said it was the shock BUT you needed shocks anyway!! WTF
jljbtm
Yep, that did it 2 new rear shocks no more rattle
