Rattle/Cracking sound from Windshield

Recommended Posts

I've had my Edge for over a year now and from day-1 I have always noticed a slight crackle sound from my windshield when driving over bumps. It was annoying but I decided to deal with it. Last week I had to get my windshield replaced for other reasons. I was hoping this would fix the sound, but it's actually more obvious than before. Maybe the seal is bad? But could I have two bad seals in a row? It was done at a dealership in below freezing temperatures. Has anyone else noticed these sounds?

Thanks!

Hi Kontra. :D Since you do not mention it being looked at by the Dealer a year ago (or more recently), is it safe to assume you never brought your Edge in an attempt to have the original problem diagnosed and repaired (before the windshield actually cracked)? If that is the case, it's a shame.

There is no reason to have to "deal with" a problem concerning our vehicles. That is why we have a Bumper to Bumper Warranty (3 years/36,000 miles). You paid good money for your vehicle, and the Warranty is included in that price. No reason not to take advantage of it.

Here is what I would recommend at this point: Was it a Ford Dealer that did the windshield replacement or an aftermarket vendor? If it was a Ford owned Dealership, return to the Dealership and demonstrate the "crackle" sound to them. Do not mention that you had the "crackle" problem before the windshield was replaced (unless you had already told them previously, then do not lie if they ask), just let them diagnose and repair the problem now.

If it was an aftermarket vendor that replaced the windshield, and they say the problem is not caused by the new windshield installation, get them to put the reason the noises are occurring in writing, then go back to your Ford Dealership and have them diagnose and repair the problem under Warranty. Again, if you did not already do so, do not mention that you already had a "crackle" noise problem before the repair.

You actually should have done that a year ago when you first noticed the sound, but let's try and get it taken care of now under Warranty.

Let us know how you make out and good luck. :beerchug:

Thanks for the info. I did have it replaced by my ford dealer under warranty (the wiper blade fell apart and scratched up the glass) and I hadn't mentioned the issue earlier, so I should be in good shape. I didn't mention the sound to Ford earlier because it was one of those things that didn't happen all the time. I didn't want to get there and look like a winer. Now that the sound is obvious and consistent, I think it will be easy to make the case. I've heard from the dealer that the Edge is a "noisy" car to begin with, so I just wanted to see if anyone else is experiencing this sound (crack/rattle).

Thanks!

Hi Kontra. :D Just a word of advice. No one should have to put up with a "noisy car", or a car with excessive squeaks, rattles and crackles. Do not fall for that "The Edge is a noisy car to begin with" garbage. That is the standard type of reply that lazy Service Department Staffs give when they don't feel like spending time troubleshooting a problem. Most Service Departments and Staff members are very good at their jobs. Unfortunately there are some exceptions, and you may have run into one of those exceptions.

If it was the Service Writer who told you that line of bull, ask to speak to the Service Manager next time. If it was the Service Manager, ask to speak to the Dealers General Manager. And if you get no relief there, take your Edge to another Ford Dealership.

Let us know how you make out, and good luck. :beerchug:

  • 1 month later...

Had a nice surprise this morning (-20 C where I live)...the windshield just cracked from left to right all the way. The crack is about 4 inches up from the dash - exactly where the defrost vents hit it.

I have always had a problem with the wipers freezing and ice accumulation in this 4 inch zone from the bottom of the windshield to where the vents start working.

Critical engineering flaw. I did not buy the first year of the MKX so that they would have time to make engineering changes like this.

I to have the PTU problem as well with the smell of burning oil in the cabin.

Also noticed that when slowing down in snow or ice the vehicle (AWD) keeps moving forward as if it is trying to compensate for something. I was at a stop light and almost at a complete stop with the brakes applied. Damn thing pushed me well into the intersection and was not going to stop until I put it in Neutral. This could have been really bad for both Ford and myself. Only did it it one other time.

I have been happy with so many other features of this vehicle I sure hope the dealership steps up. I do not want it to be my last North American made vehicle.

2008 MKX, 25,000 km.

Do you have a Vista rook?? If yes, it's not your windshield it's the vista roof. I have a 08 limited AWD and it does it all the time. My dealer says they can't find why it's doing it. I found a TSB on this site for the fix for vista roofs but for 07 model. So the next time I bring it in for service I plan on providing my dealer with details how to fix the issue. very silly.

Is this the TSB for the seal breaking loose? My roof rattles after 600 miles. It is really bugging me. Does anybody have the actual TSB number?

Looking for this TSB number....I have a 2010 with Vista and the creaking is driving me nuts! It creaks more when it's cold. Dealer has re-attached the roof connectors?? but problem has continued.
