When you say you have a glass roof, I assume you mean the electronic panoramic roof?  If so, there is a thread on this that pinpoints the cause of the rattle that many of us have.  I just fixed mine a week or so ago.  Here's the thread.....

Thank you! Yes, electronic panoramic roof

I have a 2017 with panoramic glass roof. The sunshade rattles when it is in closed position, the rattle is coming from just behind the rear seats, I think from the roller mechanism. Anyone had this issue? Noise goes away if the shade is even slightly opened.

Did you ever find the issue? I have the same ticking/rattle, but it seems to go away when slight pressure is applied to the rolled up sunshade. The noise is less noticeable when the sunshade is at some point between open and closed, and completely gone when the sunshade is fully closed.

Did you try the solution stated in the thread linked above? This one

The dealer had no idea how to fix it. There’s a post in the thread from a while back, where wrapping a Velcro tie strap around a clip on the bar that keeps the shade in place. The bar runs from side to side between the roof and the where the glass panel ends. The clip is located above the passenger side rear seat on the left side (if you’re looking out the back).

It recommended a skinny short one, but I it would come loose over time and the rattle would come back. It’s really hard to get to, so I tried a wider and longer Velcro strap that would be a little stronger. Give it 2 tight wraps around the clip, then wrap it around the bar tightly (like a snake). This helps keep the Velcro in place over the rattling clip. It’s just hard to reach in there and wrap the Velcro, but it’s worth the pain in the a** to do it. Occasionally, I start to hear the rattle again a little bit, but simply pushing the Velcro back towards the clip eliminates the rattle again.

It's been the best fix for the issue and lasts a very long time. I honestly forget that it’s an issue until it slightly comes back. A great fix! I’ll try to find the original post with the first solution and bump it.

My wife has a 2021 Ford Edge ST with the panoramic sunroof. It developed a very annoying squeak over a year ago. Finally got serious about fixing it.

Thought the squeak was coming from the rear hatch. Got back there and rode around. Nope. Then we noticed if you cracked the sun shade a bit the severity of the squeaking was reduced. Searched around the internet and found plenty of content discussing how the seals for the sunroof need to wiped down and lubricated. Did that. Nope.

Was out running errands today and my wife for some reason pushed up on the sun shade. The squeaking was nearly eliminated. Got home and took a good look at the tracks for it. Went and grabbed some 3-in-1 Garage Door dry lubricant and shot it along the tracks it travels in then cycled it 4-5 times. Took the car out and there is zero squeaking.

So if your Edge is cursed with that squeak that kinda sorta sounds like a rattle as well -- get some dry lube aerosol (the kind that comes with an application straw) -- and shoot the lengths of the areas indicated in the photo -- because contrary to popular belief it's not the sunroof that's squeaking -- it's the sunroof shade instead.

Thank you so much for that information. I had a 2021 ST and after about 5000 miles it did the same exact thing! When I would push up on the sunshade or open it the tiniest bit the problem would disappear! So irritating!

I recently traded in for a 2024, but I am sure in time this will happen. Thank you!!!

Thanks EdgeST2020 for the Velcro fix! I have a 23 Edge ST and was having the same issue with squeaking coming from the back of the panoramic moonroof. This seems to have fixed the noise so far - fingers crossed. I had the same issue before turning in my 2019 Edge Titanium.

Well, I traded my 21 in for a 2024 ST and after about 5300 miles I am hearing the clicking/ticking/popping sound so many of you described. Could anyone provide me a better description of where that bar is located? I did see the great pictures (and fix) provided by EdgeST2020 but just wanted to verify the location of that bar. Thanks so much! I know taking it to the dealer would just be a waste of time, so I will fix it myself.

It is in the very back of the area where the roof opens on the right (passenger) side.  There is a silver metal clip, almost hook shaped, that goes over a metal thin rod that goes from the left to right side of the vehicle in the back.  It is very hard to see.  You have to push the left side of your head against the glass (with the sunscreen cover all the way open of course) and look towards that back passenger side corner.  I got one of those very small eyeglass screwdrivers and put a thin piece of cloth about 1/2 inch square over the end of the screwdriver and pushed it between the silver metal springlike hook that goes over the bar and the rattle/ticking is gone!  I have had mine work its way out a few times and had to push it back in.

Yep that’s the spot! I chose to use a Velcro strap like EdgeST2020 originally recommended, but I used a wider and longer one and wrapped the extra down the bar. It’s been working great and occasionally just needs to be pushed back on the clip if it comes slightly loose. Overall a great fix.

I too had this rattle in my 2020 ST .. my fix was to take a piece of a tactical belt which is a little heavier and thicker than the Velcro … lift up on that spring loaded clip and place this piece under the clip that rest on the rail.. perfect fix been like this for about two months works without out fail … no noise or rattling

I have a noise starting on my '24 and I suspect it's the metal bar that others have velcro'd. Thanks for this info!

GTEyes, You and I both have 2024's and I didn't know if you had time to see if it was in fact the clip/bar. I'm going to look at mine this weekend and try to verify. I keep everyone posted. Thanks everyone for all the great info/help!

It definitely is that bar...when I push on it, it makes the hollow tick noise. I had a piece of velcro under the little spring arm that pushes against the bar for awhile and it didn't seem to help. I might take a more aggressive approach next fix attempt now that the dealer isn't going to do anything.

I kept it all closed up for a month as we moved into winter and not using it seemed to let it settle and the ticking stopped.

Had the dealer look at it a few weeks ago and they didn't see any issues.

Now that it's been opened and poked at it's doing it again..so trying to keep it closed (including shade)to see if that helps again.

Excited that we have some keeners in this discussion that want to try and troubleshoot and problem solve.

Sounds like we are hearing the same sound. A clicking/popping metallic sound that is random, but definitely more active when you hit bumps in the road. One thing I noticed, when it is cold outside and the car sits overnight, the sound doesn't start until the car warms up in the sun and in the cabin.

I too have no faith in my dealer and plan on fixing it myself. I am taking the car in for routine service, and I am going to tell the service writer about the issue. I am going to ask if there are any service bulletins and or TST's regarding this.

I also plan on sitting in the back seat and having someone else drive, to help verify where the noise is coming from.

Amazing how something like a small clip can cause so much headache. I am wondering if it could be the bar itself moving when there is flexing in this area? Also I saw a video where the headliner is very easy to release to gain more access to that area. It uses a series of clips and magnets to hold the headliner in place.

Your observation aligns with mine...the cold weather snap we had here about a month ago had this issue basically disappear, right when I had my dealer appointment.

I experience the same thing when the temperature drops. I find I have to adjust or push on the Velcro to cover the clip more often during the summer months.

The fix I saw on another thread (see below) had a lot more velcro...mine was only a small piece between the clip and bar, which might be why it didn't seem to do anything.

I have a 2020 ST that I recently purchased.  The sunroof in the rear area has the clicking sound that many have stated they experienced.  Has anyone found a fix yet?  I think that the clicking sound could be coming from the headliner plastic skeleton near the roll up area of the sunroof.  I have tried to figure out how to resolve the issue since this is very disturbing.  This happens as been stated by others when the car proceeds over bumps and the body itself twists some.  My other thought is that the backing on the headliner itself has a material the has dried up some and has become brittle and that creates the clicking noise.  I can recreate the sound by hand moving the liner.  Does anyone know if a dealer has any remedy?  This makes me almost want to sell the car after owning it for only 4 months.  I had a 2018 Titanium with the same moonroof and had no issues.  What gives here?

The dealer never had any idea how to fix it for me on my ‘18 Sport. Thankfully, the post of the photo shown above seems to be the only solution. I found better luck with wider Velcro. Sometimes you have to push the Velcro back over the clip if it slips a little off the clip, but it works for sure.
