1004ron Posted December 14, 2021 Report Share Posted December 14, 2021 My 2017 Sport's hood struts have lost their vigor (need Viagra) and I have to open the hood all the way by hand, and it will at least stay there, but I do recall that I could lift the hood the first foot or two and it would take off on its own to full open. They always match the online pricing. The reviews for the Autozone struts were less than favourable. omar302 Posted December 15, 2021 Report Share Posted December 15, 2021 Since your OEM struts failed relatively soon, I'd usually recommend going for aftermarket, whatever sells a lot on eBay for example. But a quick search doesn't reveal choices, only one listing from China. So it seems you only have the OEM option. On the other hand, are you sure both failed? Maybe only one requires replacement. omar302 Posted December 15, 2021 Report Share Posted December 15, 2021 Ok, I just checked my 2016 Edge and it too doesn't go up by itself. The struts can hold the hood in its place anywhere from ~1/4 open (pictured below) up to fully open. On a 2015 MKS, I have to lift the hood higher than in the Edge until the struts kick in, around half way open, but then they raise the hood the last 1/4 way by themselves. 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Edgingage Posted December 15, 2021 Report Share Posted December 15, 2021 (edited) I installed Redline in my 2011 Edge SEL (had none from factory). They're doing a terrific job, amazing. But they're a little more expensive, over $100 the set of two struts plus needed hardware to install from scratch (you may need to use the struts only). Just make sure you'll replace them with the exact same length. You can email Redline with all kind of questions, they respond within 1 business day (if not the same day) they have a top notch customer care. Recommended. 1004ron Posted December 15, 2021 Author Report Share Posted December 15, 2021 I bought the Redline Tuning ones on Black Friday at $85 for my wife's Mustang and they work great with that long hood - from about two foot open they briskly take it all the way open. I browsed the Redline website but didn't see a direct replacement - will send a request. The Mustang didn't come with struts - I chose the Redline because their mounting brackets were the best. I started doubting my memory with regards it open on its own from about two foot, but a week ago when I installed a set on my wife's Mustang it reminded me how it did and should work. I honestly don't remember how it was before, but some time ago we replaced failed hood struts on a Nissan Patrol with after an market set from eBay (Tuff Support) and when we first opened the hood afterwards it felt like the hood jumped open. But it also made closing the hood harder due to the resistance of the struts from fully open till the last 2 feet or so. Guess you can't have everything. Edgingage Posted December 17, 2021 Report Share Posted December 17, 2021 (edited) Well, in mine it's fairly effortless both ways. Once I release the safety latch I can use one hand to start lifting it up, the struts kick in at about 1 foot height (measured). Pretty much the same to close it down, I use one hand to push it down, and when it gets at around a foot height it actually shuts completely down itself by the same motion and weight coming down. Opening up, it slows down nicely at the end of its way up but it doesn't in its way down, it keeps constant motion coming down and no resistance from the struts in its last foot to close freely. That first foot high to open or close has no strut force or resistance. It's a beauty in action, that's why I wrote above "recommended", I should have written (to Ford) "highly recommended" lol. I made, however, a very slight variation regarding the mounting brackets position on the hood: I moved the mounting location on the hood 3/4" down (towards the rear end); that allows the hood to open up a little bit higher (maybe 1-2" higher) in its highest point (full open). Everything else was done as per Redline Tuning instructions freshly revised at the time after a correction I suggested in the instructions for the 2011-14 Edge. Just to confirm, that link has them at $48 for the pair? I'm going to get a set - I liked the way it lifted fully open when my Sport was new. I also noticed the same. They are physically the same with the exception of the (R) & (L) printed on them (pics attached). They are even prices exactly the same. Found even Toyota does the same thing having two different part numbers for right & left.
