Lithium ion batteries cycle life is significantly increased by only charging to 80% of full, but lead acid requires top up with equalizing voltage of 14.6 or better at least once a month to avoid early sulfation and loss of capacity. They don't like to be deeply discharged for sure, that ruins them too but they prefer 95% plus charging most of the time, and require top up occasionally. There is no official reason from Ford on why the battery is charged to 80% (as far as I know). Maybe it is simply for fuel economy that charging the battery from 80% to 100% requires considerably more energy that they deemed that it is not worth the extra fuel, hence charging to only 80% and selecting an appropriate battery size accordingly.

Fair enough, thanks for the information
Cerberus
Interesting thing, you can alter your target battery charge level in Forscan while you are telling it is an AGM.. and turning off the double beep, and turning on secure idle..

I eventually got a locally made H6 battery. Half the price of MotorCraft's BXT65.
flymore
Received advertisement from my dealer for the "Fast Lane" motorcrafter battery replacement for $149.95 plus taxes and installation. Haven't called yet, but thinking this wouldn't fit my Edge? Installation? $100? Tempting
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
if it is the biggest baddest agm battery that ford has to offer, 149.95 is an excellent price indeed. something you might get if you were a LEO lol. my guess is it would be the minimum battery that meets factory specs for your vehicle.

Right, and paying for instalation probably makes it less of a value, if it is something you can do yourself.. which I'd say most people can.
flymore
I'm planning on using the H6 730cca battery from Costco as above in my 2018 Edge. Not sure what option to set for this in forscan? The OEM battery is show as a Varta 60Ah 520CCA H5 Case as in the attached picture. Thanks for any help.
1004ron
I suggest changing the Forscan display option and select what @omar302 suggested. Quote I'd go "0C" or "0D".
Wubster100
Is H7 the maximum size that will fit or has anyone tried to install a H8 battery?

Not 100% sure but I suspect H7 is the largest, and more than the vehicle really needs unless you have auto start stop enabled (which i vehemently advise against)

omar302
As @Cerberus stated, H7 is probably overkill, by a big margin. As for fit, I don't expect it to fit. I remeber the battery tray having 3 holes for mounting thr battery, for H5, H6 & H7.
Wubster100
@onyxbflyDo you have any photos of the H7 battery installed?
Wubster100
I think I will have to go with an H7 battery. My current battery is about 3 years old. The auto start stop hasn’t worked for about 10 months. The radio doesn’t stay on after the engine turns off. I always get the system off to save power message. When I start the car I have to wait a little while for the screen to turn on. Fordpass only stays connected for about an hour. The keyless entry stopped working. The biggest problem is not being able to use Fordpass to remote start, because it’s getting cold out.

I hope it's just the battery getting old.. 3 years is not a long time for a quality battery, but if you were using the auto stop/start system, then it does make some sense that the battery would be tired if it did a lot of cycles. FWIW I also had the H7 installed but I traded that vehicle in and don't have pictures I don't think
Wubster100
I went for a 30 minute city drive and the battery SOC increased from 34% to 39%. Once I parked I almost immediately lost Fordpass. The vehicle has about 70k miles, and I got it used, so I don’t know what happened in the past. I did use it to jump start a vehicle once. 1004ron
Why not get the battery tested, or buy one of these testers (I have this one): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Z67MMGC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Edited November 26 by 1004ron
Wubster100
The last time I got my battery tested at a parts store, the tester said the battery was good, but it just needed charged. I will go to another parts store and get the battery tested. But isn't the battery supposed to be fully charged before testing? Edited November 26 by Wubster100
1004ron
It does not have to be fully charged for the type of tester that I posted - my tester has been very reliable.
Wubster100
I currently have the original H6 AGM battery. A few months ago, auto start stop worked for a few days after I drove for about 8 hours on the highway.
