Ford Edge with Roof top tent

Recommended Posts

The mattress is very comfortable.  It’s a full sized bed.  In the past I’ve used sleeping bags- here in TX I might just need a thin sheet in the summertime.

it fits in my garage by about an inch.

I can deploy the tent in about a minute, putting it up is about 2-3 min as you have to tuck in the canvas.

There is more room in the rooftop tent.  Also, keep in mind that the rear area with seats folded down is not flat.  You could build a platform to level it, but it would still be narrower and shorter.

im thinking of building a platform so I can sleep 2 up top, 2 down below.

I’m 6’2” and I can sit-up in the rooftop tent

I've always been intrigued by those.

How does the tent's interior length compare to potentially sleeping inside the Edge, with the front seats moved fully forward. with the second row folded down, combined with the cargo area, perhaps using something like this?

Good luck!

Man that's expensive. $330?  I looked on Amazon and this one sells for $43.

Hello,

I have been looking into putting a RTT on my 2013 Ford Edge. I have been running all over the internet to figure out weight and the right crossbar set up but there is not much for the Edge. Thus post is the first I have seen a tent on top of an Edge! I was happy to see it! So, my question is how much dynamic weight can the Edge carry and what kind of crossbars did you use to hold your tent? I know the factory crossbars are no good. I would appreciate any advice!

Thank you!

According to Ford, the maximum weight that's allowed on a 2013 Ford Edge  roof rails is 100 lbs. (Applies to all years of Edge or MKX.)

At least one individual (this forum) have written that they have slept overnight in one of these tents and that they weigh 240 lbs.

The 100 lb max weight rating probably takes dynamic wind loading into account (i.e. uplift.)

From the 2013 Owner's manual:

ROOF RACKS AND LOAD CARRIERS (IF EQUIPPED) WARNING: When loading the roof rail crossbars, it is recommended to evenly distribute the load, as well as maintain a low center of gravity. Loaded vehicles, with higher centers of gravity, may handle differently than unloaded vehicles. Extra precautions, such as slower speeds and increased stopping distance, should be taken when driving a heavily loaded vehicle. Note: The maximum recommended load is 100 pounds (45 kilograms), evenly distributed on the crossbars. Note: Loads should never be placed directly on the roof panel. The roof panel is not designed to directly carry a load. For proper function of the roof rack system, loads must be placed directly on crossbars affixed to the roof rack side rails. Your vehicle may be equipped with factory-installed crossbars. Ford Genuine Accessory crossbars, designed specifically for your vehicle, are also recommended for use with your roof rack system. Make sure that the load is securely fastened. Check the tightness of the load before driving and at each fuel stop.
