Craigtaz
I own a 2014 Edge with AWD. I bought it new in 2015. I have had an intermittently problem for the last two years. Every now and then the amber wrench light will illuminate on the dash, indicating a problem with the AWD system. I’ve never noticed any type of system malfunction, only the warning light. Our local Ford dealer has looked at it time and again, but they can not figure out the cause of the warning light. They claim the drivetrain checks out ok. They submitted the issue to Ford, but Ford isn’t aware of any issues. I’d like to get this taken care of while my drivetrain warranty is still in effect. Has anyone here with an AWD Edge had this issue? Thanks.
akirby
Is the warning light still on when the dealer looks at it? If so they should be able to get a code. If not you might want to try a different dealer.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Most of us that have had problems with the AWD system have NEVER had a warning light LOL. It is possibly a wiring issue such as from the 4x4 module to the ATC connector (of the RDU). AWD Messages Action / DescriptionAWD Off Displayed when the AWD system has been automatically disabled to protect itself. This is caused by operating the vehicle with the compact spare tire installed or if the system is overheating. The AWD system will resume normal function and clear this message after driving a short distance with the road tire re-installed or after the system is allowed to cool.Check AWD Displayed in conjunction with the Throttle Control/Transmission/AWD light when the AWD system is not operating properly. If the warning stays on or continues to come on, contact your authorized dealer as soon as possible Note: When an AWD system fault is present, the warning Check AWD will display in the information display. The AWD system is not functioning correctly and defaulted to front-wheel drive. When this warning is displayed, have your vehicle serviced at an authorized dealer. Note: The AWD Off message may also be displayed in the information display if the AWD system has overheated and defaulted to front-wheel drive. This condition may occur if the vehicle was operated in extreme conditions with excessive wheel slip, such as deep sand. To resume normal AWD function as soon as possible, stop the vehicle in a safe location and stop the engine for at least 10 minutes. After the engine has been restarted and the AWD system has adequately cooled, the AWD Off message will turn off and normal AWD function will return. In the event the engine is not stopped, the AWD Off message will turn off when the system cools and normal AWD function returns. Do not use a spare tire of a different size other than the tire provided. If the mini-spare tire is installed, the AWD system may disable automatically and enter front-wheel drive only mode to protect driveline components. This condition may be indicated by an AWD Off message in the information display. If there is an AWD Off message in the message center from using the spare tire, this indicator should turn off after reinstalling the repaired or replaced normal road tire and cycling the ignition off and on. It is recommended to reinstall the repaired or replaced road tire as soon as possible. Major dissimilar tire sizes between the front and rear axles could cause the AWD system to stop functioning and default to front-wheel drive or damage the AWD system. akirby
Wait - are you getting an AWD Off message or just a general Wrench warning light?
Craigtaz
The warning light is the wrench light telling me to check the AWD system. My Edge has been at the Ford dealer for 9 days now and they still can't figure out the cause. The light was on when I dropped it off and they were able to retrieve a code, but they have hit some sort of dead end. Frankly I don't have much faith in them. My service advisor claims they have done all of the diagnostics that they can do, they have submitted the issue to Ford engineers. I'll be picking my car up today, I plan on contacting Ford directly. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue.
1004ron
When I turned on the ignition after I did a lube service, which included the PTU, I got this warning light, .......... because I forgot to connect the PTU temperature sensor.

Interesting, thank for the info. I have the car back now from Ford. Can you tell me what the PTU temp sensor & cable looks like?
1004ron
Here's a photo - I'll try find a better one. It gets in the way of the fill plug, so I unplug it when filling. The brass device is the temp sensor. Edited November 15, 2018 by 1004ron

Craigtaz
Thanks. I'm embarrassed to ask, but what is the component in the photo, and where is it located? BTW, according to the paperwork from Ford, the fault code for my issue is P188B. Edited November 15, 2018 by Craigtaz

I'm not sure which item/component you're referring to. Bear in mind that I didn't check for error codes seeing as I knew exactly what the cause was - check @WWWPerfA_ZN0W for the likely cause of your error code. WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Only in 2015-18 Sports, and probably 2019+ ST as well. But no drain plug and no temp sensor on 2007-

The AWD still works perfectly and the display on the dashboard for the AWD indicates that it is OK. strange - could it possibly be a sensor not working properly? Have you resolved your similar problem since your post?
