Removing Side Roof Panels?

Recommended Posts

While lubricating the rear slides on my panoramic sunroof today, I slid the back bracket too far to the rear that the set of rollers fell out of the track.  I was able to work them back in but I think the rollers came off the bracket.  Does anyone know how to remove this top side panel that is next to the stationary glass of the sunroof?  There are clips in the middle that are able to pop out but there must be some other type of fastener in the front and back as they were not budging at all.

I believe the Gen 1's had an additional trim strip, outboard of the glass roof side panel, where the roof rack bars would mount on a non-panoramic model, and I don't see those secondary filler strips in TonyP's photo...

Because of that, I pulled Gen 2 instructions, but perhaps I'm wrong.

Good luck!

I did literally the exact same thing while cleaning the tracks on my wife's edge.  I took it to the dealer, figuring they could pop the roof side panels off quickly and we would be in and out in no time.  Unfortunately the dealer claims that is not possible.  They claim the roof panels are bonded with the body and can't be removed without breaking, and say it will cost $2500+ to fix.  I don't believe it.

I tried searching YouTube for any videos about removing these panels, but I couldn't find anything.  Any help would be most appreciated.

The 2016 Edge Workshop Manual provides the following illustration & description of the Roof Opening Panel Trim components:

52000929230_8d330d94b8_o.jpg

From Section 501-17 Roof Opening Panel - System Operation and Component Description...

Roof Opening Panel Trim (Exterior)

There are 2 rear side trim panels, 2 front side trim panels and a front trim panel on the exterior of the roof opening panel assembly. All of the exterior retaining clips are designed to break when removing the trim panels and must be replaced if an original trim panel is to be installed. Always be sure to remove all broken pieces of trim clips from the vehicle when servicing. To service the front side trim panel, both the front trim panel and the rear side trim panel must be removed. When replacing the rectangular retaining clips, the directional arrow cutout on the retainer must match the embossed directional arrow on the trim panel at each retainer location. A new exterior trim panel is serviced with all new retainers in position. New service front trim and rear side trim panels each have one rear spacer block with adhesive tape and a protective film that must be removed during installation.

The retainer count needed for each trim panel is as follows:

  • Front trim - 7 square clips.
  • Front side trim - 4 square clips, 3 round clips.
  • Rear side trim - 4 square clips, 2 round clips.

Roof Opening Panel Center Beam Trim

The roof opening panel center beam trim is an interior trim panel covering the center support beam of the roof opening panel frame

While the above description does not mention use of urethane adhesive on factory-installed trim, Section 501-17 provides Removal Instructions for Trim Panel Installed Without Urethane and also Removal instructions for Trim Panels Installed With Urethane.

It's worth noting the Workshop Manual states that Trim Panels installed without urethane can be reinstalled using new retention clips and urethane adhesive, but previously serviced Trim Panels reinstalled with urethane adhesive must be discarded and a fully new Trim Panel should be installed with urethane adhesive. And further, that the Rear Side Panel must be removed before the Front Side Panel can be removed.

If you are not the Edge's original owner, it's possible that the dealership saw previous service done to Trim Panels in Warranty History, and they know that fully new Trim Panel replacements will be required.

Regarding replacement costs, FordParts.com shows MSRP for FT4Z5851916B - Front Sunroof Opening Trim at $364; for FT4Z5851969C - Center Left Sunroof Opening Trim and FT4Z5851968C - Center Right Sunroof Opening Trim around $380 each; and for FT4Z5851969D - Rear Left Sunroof Opening Trim and FT4Z5851968D - Rear Right Sunroof Opening Trim also around $380 each.

Below are PDF download links to the Section 501-17 Trim Panel Removal and Installation instructions...

Please note that due to PDF formatting issues, action step illustrations may appear on the page following the action step description.

It may be worth taking the Workshop Manual removal and installation instructions to the dealership, and ask them if your Edge's trim panels were previously serviced. or, if an engineering change resulted in urethane adhesive being applied at the factory on Edges after a certain Build Date.

Good luck!

The Edge Workshop Manual provides a General Procedures description for Fixed Glass, but the Workshop Manual lacks a separate procedure for the removing and installing the windshield.

Document download linkFixed Glass - General Procedures - 2015 Edge Workshop Manual.pdf

Online videos here and here show aftermarket firms performing windshield installations on GEN 1 Edges with their Panoramic Roof front & side trim panels in place and unaffected.

One minimal risk to the roof trim panels could develop when the technician is standing upon he tdoor opening while cutting, cleaning, or applying glass sealant, and perhaps put his/her weight on the trim panel using hand, forearm, or elbow.

Were you able to retrieve the blown-off trim panel, in order to determine if it was retained only by the trim clips, or if it also showed adhesive remnants on the trim panel, or if the panel wasn't recovered -- on the corresponding roof structure?

Good luck!

I was unaware that it blew off until we got home. The roof is clean no busted clips no glue. And the front corner is coming up now and I  can see a clip missing. The windshield replacement is the only body work ever done on this car. And of course Safelite doesn’t want to take responsibility. I can’t find anything on instructions for windshield replacement to know if they removed it or not.

Not sure if your insurance company funded the windshield replacement, but at this point, the front trim and the rear driver's side trim panels are vulnerable to the same loss your Edge has already suffered.

Based upon costs quoted above from my earlier post, I'd suggest contacting your insurance company to see what they will cover and what your deductible, if any, will be.  If your insurance company paid for the recent windshield replacement, they may have a customer satisfaction feature that may cover the side panel replacement, and then the insurance company would pursue cost recovery from Safelite, without you needing to be concerned about it.

Based on your description and your photo, the missing trim panel was -- and all the still-present (for now) trim panels are -- retained only by the original plastic clips, with no urethane adhesive used at the factory.

The previously posted 2016 Edge Workshop Manual sections covering roof trim panels describe removal and re-use is possible for trim panels not originally installed with urethane adhesive.  For you, that's favorable, since it means those trim panels now remaining in place can be removed and reinstalled using new clips and urethane adhesive to ensure they are not eventually blown off like the now-missing panel.

It's worth noting that the Workshop Manual section on Roof Trim Panel Removal and Installation was revised in late January 2017, presumably to include factory installation using urethane adhesive, whenever that revised factory procedure was implemented.

When speaking with your Insurance company, it may be worth asking if they would pay for the remaining panels to be reinstalled using urethane adhesive, in order to avoid any future claims for subsequent trim panel loss.  Even if they won't cover it, perhaps your dealer or other repair facility will discount their pricing based upon the totality of the job.

For the sake of readability, I will include an edited Side Trim Panel procedure from the 2015 Edge Workshop Manual immediately below, and I'll also attach a PDF download links at the end of this post...
