New radio has no audio

Recommended Posts

Assuming that everything is wired properly, front speakers to #7, rear to #8, sub to #9, I'd verify the radio is actually switched to the FM spectrum and not switched to AUX. If nothing is plugged into AUX, you'll no sound.

I do this every once in awhile. I sometimes watch cable TV on my cell phone and run the sound via BT to the head unit. Next time I start the beast, I forget its switched over to IBTSTI and get no sound (until in sinks in and I switch over from duhhhhh to ahhhhh).

I've turned the volume up all the way and there's nothing. Even if the antenna would not send a signal, wouldn't I hear static?

I did some online research and one guy suggested the subwoofer connection might not work. I'm not sure how the subwoofer is connected to the head unit. If it has it's own amp, there wouldn't be any speaker connections from the radio. But the amp has to be switched on and the audio signal has to come in from the radio, right?

The old unit (6 disc changer) had 3 connectors, the two smaller ones I don't know what they are good for.

Apart from being old and outdated.... why did you replace the original radio? Did the original radio work?  I ask because all you really need to install an aftermarket radio these days are the corresponding harnesses.  Radio installs are typically plug and play.  If your previous radio worked without issues then it could be the harness or the replacement radio. I like to check the cheapest/ easiest solution first.

That's what I asked above and he replied that everything is wired properly.  But I still suspect that the speakers are wired wrong.

Edgewater, you need to pull the acu and visually verify that the correct speakers are connected to the proper terminals.

No static at max volume indicates either a defective power amp in the acu or miswired speakers.

I took the unit out again and checked the wiring and it's correct!

I ohmed the speaker wires and I get around 5 Ohms.

I connected a stray speaker that I had lying around to the radio and there was nothing.

I noticed a "Mute" wire on the Metra harness, which I don't know where to connect to and I am wondering if that unconnected wire could the culprit?

I'm picking up what you're putting down!

  • 1 month later...

Finally got this thing running, even the rear cam.

Enigma was right, the speakers were wrongly wired. I, erroneously, assumed the RCA connectors (labeled FR, FL, etc.) were the speaker outputs, which, of course, they weren't.

Everything works, except the sub woofer. I assume that one of the 2 empty connectors that are left from the old unit is for the sub woofer and amp. Is there an adapter that I could buy or do I need to splice 12V and audio input into that connector?

The other open connector is, presumably, for the steering wheel controls. There are several adapters available but I'm not sure which one would be best. Any recommendations?

Thanks again for putting up with me.
