BAMR Rattle

Hello,

My '08 AWD Limited w/7200 mi. has just developed a slight rattle. I think it has something to do w/ the sunroof.

With the glass closed and the shade 1/3 open, I can hear the noise on slightly rough roads. If the shade is all the way open, theres no rattle. If shade is closed, theres no rattle.

I casually looked around the sunroof, but found nothing obvious to me.

I read other posts about loose or unglued trim, but it does not explain where these parts are located.

I hate to take the car to the dealer and lose a day, if Its simple enough to fix at home.

Anyone out there have this problem? How was it fixed ?

Otherwise, rest of car is tight so far.

Thanks All

Hi sanche. :D Since there are various causes for a rattle such as this (as you stated, some already known and covered under TSB's), I would recommend bringing it in for service.

Better to so do that than possibly exacerbate the problem by toying with it yourself.

Good luck. :beerchug:

Hello,

Out of curiosity, I took a second look. There is a plastic frame around the stationary glass, you can see it from inside the car's back seat when the shade is retracted. It looks like its just glued on. I pushed the frame against the glass, plus, there are small foam pieces (4 of them) between the track and the roof, it looks like an after thought  . One of the pieces was out of place.

I've been driving the car for (2) 1/2 hr. commutes so far and the noise is gone.

Although I got off easy, sometimes it pays to have a look-see on your own before you commit to the dealer.

What really bugs me is the memory seat. I followed the instructions exactly and very carefully, But it seems that about every other time I put the key in the ignition, the seat alternates positions. It sets automatically to pos. 1, fine, then the next time I put the key in, it goes to position 2 :banghead: .Am I doing something wrong?

I usually unlock the car w/ my key fob, my wife has the other, but rarely uses it.

Hi sanche. :D Glad you were able to find the cause of your moon roof rattle, and save yourself a special trip to the Dealer for a fix.

However, just a word of caution: You had been driving for 7,200 miles before the rattle began (looks like the foam moved out of place, possibly due to the loose trim). What you have done is temporarily fix it, as it will likely eventually move out of place again. Inanimate objects do not heal themselves, so with the loose trim piece it will only get worse over time again. And over time, it may progress (or regress) to the point that you can not fix it yourself.

Eventually, next time you have your car to the Dealer for regular service, I would advise that you have the roof looked at and permanently fixed. Better to have it taken care of permanently. Also, by doing this the problem will be noted in your service records.

Concerning the "memory seats". That is a tougher one. Just thinking out loud here: Is it possible that you may accidentally hit one of the buttons while getting out of the car? Have you programmed either remote keyfob to be recognized and set the seat position when pressed? I know these two ideas are not the likely causes, but again, just thinking out loud.

Other than those types of scenarios, the only other valid possibility I can put forth would be an electronic glitch, which unfortunately would likely require an eventual Dealer visit.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck. :beerchug:

Hi BBF,

About the roof, you're right, it won't heal itself, but I feel alot better about finding the source, and maybe it will help other Edge/MKX owners know where to check.

Next time I visit the dealer, I'll ask them to apply whatever TSB fix there is.

The memory seats need to be looked at. There's something wrong there. The good news is that it sets correctly w/ the corresponding button.

Thanks for the come back,

Sanche
