Totem64
I am planning on installing a dual battery system in my 2014 Ford Edge, and am looking for any helpful suggestions on where to install the extra battery. The engine compartment seems pretty crammed. Anyone else installa dual system, and if so any tips and tricks greatly appreciated. The secondary battery system needs to be able to be charged by the alternator, an AC supply, or solar charging panels, and will run a DC cooler and camping equipment. Thanks! For your needs, I would consider camping power source. Can be plugged in to the Edge and recharged (or 120) and still be portable when at the campsite. Totem64
I want to be able to run the car fridge continuously off the dual battery. Any particular reason why you wouldnt recommend it? The camping power generators dont provide enough continuous power for long trips to remote locations.......

Because they’re portable And provide all the charging options you just mentioned. Charge it from the car while you drive and run the mini fridge from the car while driving. When you stop switch it to the battery pack with solar or AC power. Recharge it with the car if necessary. And it’s not lead acid.
Totem64
Ok, thanks for your input. I plan on using a 12v Lithium-ion Battery, so no worries there. This will give me greater lasting watt hours than any of the camping power stations can provide. This way I can run all of my 12v equipment and minimize solar charging time, and not risk draining my starting battery.

As your camper has a electric refrigerator, why not add the camping battery on the camper hitch?
Totem64
Well, I do have a hitch, but no camper ? the portable fridge is behind the seat in the SUV.
enigma-2
Ahh, now I see. (Was seeing a pop-up or the like). Well, I dont see really see anyplace in the cabin where you could install a battery (personally I would be concerned over hydrogen gas accumulating). And the engine compartment is a no-go. I'd still recommend the portable power source. Can charge through the rear power point while travelling and be kept next to the refer. Pulled out after the trip along with the refer for space. The first one has 240 watt/hour rating and accepts their solar panels to continue charging. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D29QNMJ/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_Y10eFbKF63MVC Edited July 18, 2020 by enigma-
Totem64
Again, thank you for your input and suggestions. I have spent a fair amount of research into portable power systems and find that the Inergy Flex system is close to what my needs are. However, this model wont be released until October 2020 and they are no longer selling their previous Apex model. So since I dont want to lose the entire summer, and to have a more formalized permanent system in my vehicle, I am hoping to build a similar system in my Edge. I just dont know where on the vehicle I can mount the Lithium-ion battery. Which does not have issues with gas/acid like lead batteries do. Which is why I am focused on where to locate and mount the battery............ Was just hoping that someone else on here had figured this out already. enigma-2
Looked back through the forum and the question was asked before, here: https://www.fordedgeforum.com/topic/14410-dual-batteries/ Here's a YouTube video on adding a 2nd battery in an Explorer (although I don't see the same amount of room in the Edge). https://r.tapatalk.com/shareLink/topic?url=https://www.expeditionforum.com/threads/has-anyone-ever-done-a-dual-battery-set-up.17639/&share_tid=17639&share_fid=20862&share_type=t&link_source=app One other concern is whether a Lithium-ion battery can stand the heat being in an engine compartment. (?) Only way I can see is if you were able to find a battery with a shape that's tall and narrow. Not a box. Good luck with that.
