greyling
I’d like to make use of the interior spare compartment and retain my full size spare. I was contemplating the idea of mounting on the exterior, lift strut side (hopefully leaving the license plate exposed or it’s a quick non starter.). I figure mounting a plate inside the rear hatch and drilling through the skin would be the easy part. My bigger question is with all that new weight would the door even operate? If not are there stronger struts and shock that could make it possible. I’m asking the group to see if anyone has already gone down this road and if so what pitfalls they ran into or see. Thanks. Snoking
All I can stay is wow! For years people have hated spare tires hanging out back, and now that it is inside, someone wants..........................................
omar302
Never heard of anyone doing it on the Edge. You should also consider if the tailgate sheet metal can withstand the weight or not. Suggest you look at a hitch mounted wheel carrier like this for example: https://www.homedepot.com/p/CURT-Hitch-Mounted-Spare-Tire-Mount-Fits-2-Receiver-31006/205631724
greyling
I Like that hitch mounted for ease. I assume it obstructs the lift though? Do you know. And thanks for the response Edited July 3, 2020 by greyling
omar302
I expect it would. I don't have any experience with it, but it does have several holes so it can give different clearances. Maybe there are other models that have a mechanism to sway away when opening the liftgate.
ONEDGE16
Not sure what year is your edge but there's a fellow edge owner (Allan Pueblos) on the FEWW (Ford Edge WorldWide) group on Facebook that has done it.
