jankul
Hello. This is my first vehicle-installed navigation system and I'm wondering about updating it in the future. I have a portable Garmin that I hook up to my computer to update for free. Do we have to purchase updates for the built-ins? Thank you. Hi jankul. :D I am assuming when you say "updating" you are referring to updated maps, POI's etc? The Navigation system is DVD based. So yes, when a new DVD is released containing updated maps, POI's etc, you will have to pay for it (if you want it). Good luck. :beerchug:
Lex Talionis
do you know what version DVD you have? 4p, 6p, 7p... your nav system will have an info screen than tells you what you have currently installed.
Cindy
do you know what version DVD you have? 4p, 6p, 7p... your nav system will have an info screen than tells you what you have currently installed. As I haven't figured out how to add a topic yet and being new to this forum, I thought I would post my question after your question since it is about the Nav System. I have an 08 Edge with the Nav system. I just read on the 2009 Ford Edge that it is going to have nte next generation nav system that will have real time traffic, weather, movies, event information and gas prices of local gas stations. If we get the next version DVD for our 08 Edge, would it have any of these possibilities or is that only for the 09 Edge? If so, what a rip. I find that this nav system isn't nearly as user friendly as our portable Garmin that we bought after the Edge for my husband's trucks. I also noticed that they have done something with the air flow in them as many people have complained about that. Just curious if anybody knows about the upgrade in the nav system. Thanks for any info.

Thanks for any info. the DVD does not contain the functionality.. so unfortunately, you will get none of those great new features. the DVD only contain map data. believe me, I wish we could.. but the new nav system is a different maker - Sony - and a different form factor and just.... not the same at all. Just my luck, it would have been nice to get the newer one. I hope they still make the new DVD's available to people with the old system. I guess that they always have to improve but it's a shame when you just miss the better one. I wonder if the newer one is more user friendly. Has anyone seen one yet. Lex Talionis
New DVDs are not created by Ford per se. They are requested by Ford that they be made, but they are created and made available by Navteq and you can now, as of like last month, buy a recently released DVD called 7p. Thus far, there has been like 4p, 6p, and now 7p. search these forums for more details on that as it has been covered in depth Edited October 23, 2008 by Lex Talionis

I note that you say there is a 7P. Do you know how to go about getting it and how do you change it once you have it? Thanks
Lex Talionis
you can buy direct from Navteq.com or eBay.. your manual will tell you how to change out the DVDs...
Cindy
you can buy direct from Navteq.com or eBay.. your manual will tell you how to change out the DVDs... I just called the Dealership where I bought the Edge. The 6P is listed as 2006. I asked them at the time when I bought it and they told me that was the latest. When you go on the Navteq website, the new CD is $149.00. That seems rather high for something you just bought. They should make some sore of discount when you haven't had the vehicle that long. I guess I'll just drive with the old one for now. I can't see paying that for a few more maps which may not even be in my state. It's too bad they can't upgrade them with satelite like they do so many things. Thanks
ronnyhood
Hi i dont know if anybody even cares anymore but i was looking for something like that and found a solution. it is possible to get a packed file in the world wide web if you look around a little than you only have to burn it on a dual layer DVD and you have the new maps

I am not sure I quite understand your message though. What does packed file in the world wide web mean? Very curious as to how to acquire the new DVD as I am not planning on spending the money that they say they cost. Thanks for your info.
