JeffCamp
Hi, Maybe a dumb question but... when you update the Sync software (from the Ford site), does this also update the computer that the service tech always says needs updating? Or is it ONLY Sync ? Thanks
akirby
Only sync, but not sure exactly what you’re talking about with the service tech. Maybe you mean the pcm or the various control modules? Only rather dealer can update those.
JeffCamp
I'm not entirely sure either. I believe it's concerning fuel, timing etc. - My Ford dealership called and mentioned there was an update I needed to have installed... wasn't sure if it was the Sync stuff or even if it's just a money-grab. Thanks!
Waldo
Your car has about 20 different computer modules that all can be updated periodically, but Sync (APIM) is the only one you can do yourself. The only time your vehicle would ever "need" an update for anything else would be if there was a recall, and then it would be free. So if the dealership isn't doing it for free, then it is a money-grab for sure.
EyeDoc1
I have a 2016 Ford Edge SEL. Ford e-mailed me and said I need an update to Sync 3. To download it costs $109.00. I bought the car in 2017 so it has approx 6 months left on waranty. Has anyone had the dealer do this update for complementary? I found the VIN number on the "about" section on the display, but the other number (ESN) is covered up by the lower tool bar. Anywear else I can find this? Can't D/L the update without this... Also came across this https://www.4dtech.com/539966873113/ May work... THX. Edited December 5, 2019 by EyeDoc1

You're confusing a Sync 3 update with a map update (what you probably got the email notification for). Downloading the latest map (actually first quarter 2018) costs $109 from the map update page: https://ford.navigation.com/home/en_US/FordNA/USD Updates to Sync 3 are free from Ford's owner page (note, you have to be logged into your Ford.com account for access): https://owner.ford.com/tools/account/how-tos/keep-your-sync-up-to-date.html?gnav=header-owner BTW, neither of those are warranty items. You can ask your shop to do the work but you'll have to pony up for the hourly rate. Edited December 5, 2019 by Gadgetjq
