samsnew2this
Has anyone started exploring changing the Edge drive system to something like the X5, Porshe or Alfa rear-drive for fun front drive if needed?
enigma-2
It's my understanding that the front drive is full time (mechanically) and there is a controller at the rear that determines when the back axle is connected or not. This would require a total rework of the the transaxle, PTU and read end to make it work. And, you wouldnt really gain anything, imo. The car was designed and balanced for front wheel drive. akirby
The problem is the PTU and other systems are not built to send that much torque to the rear wheels for sustained periods. Just won’t work. Go buy an Explorer ST if you want RWD and high performance.
Waldo
I don't even know where you would start with this kind of idea. You'd have to come up with an entirely new clutch system to disconnect the front axle. And then the rear axle is only sized for max 50% of the engine torque, so you'd basically have to shut down half of the cylinders in the engine. I don't see how that would be much fun.
