2019 Edge rear defrost & engine auto off

Recommended Posts

I purchased my Ford Edge SEL in December and have been enjoying the car very much as I get used to driving it and learning the features. In the last week or so, I've noticed a quirky issue (or two). When I start the car the rear defrost is on. At first I thought this was some sort of climate-sensing feature, but the car is garaged every night and certainly isn't cold enough to warrant this being on at the start.

The other issue that I've been noticing for about the same amount of time is that the engine auto off is no longer functioning. I read the various reasons in the manual why this could happen by design and none seems to apply. I wonder if this plus the rear defrost thing are somehow related?

Anyone experience this and have a fix or other thoughts about this?

Are you talking about the Engine Start/Stop when driving function and stopped at a light or stop sign?  If so that works based on several factors, is the engine warmed up enough, do you have pressure on the brake pedal, do you have the shifter in sport mode?  The last one is if sport mode is on an SEL of course.  The brake pedal switch seems to be some sort of two step deal where if you just rest your foot on it enough to just keep you stopped it does not turn off the motor, at least on my ST, if I stop and let the brake up lightly the engine restarts.  Sport mode disables it and engine temp and interior temp also stop it from turning off.  Too cold in the cabin and it will keep on to heat the cabin more.

The defroster on mine only comes on when remote starting by itself.  If i get in and just push the button it does not turn on no matter how cold it is.

"Are you talking about the Engine Start/Stop when driving function and stopped at a light or stop sign?"

Yes, this is what i'm referring to. I don't believe any of the conditions you mention apply here.  It is an SEL, it is not in sport mode. I have observed the condition where Engine Start/Stop doesn't work when the engine is not warmed up, and I don't think it's that. This is new behavior in the last week or so. I have not turned Engine Start/Stop off either with the steering wheel control or the center console switch. I haven't done a longer drive this week to test it, but I will soon but before this started happening, my daily commute was long enough to make the feature perform as designed, so this lack of function now has me somewhat concerned. I also saw this:

The system may not shut down the engine under certain conditions, for example:
  • To maintain the interior climate.
  • Low battery voltage.
  • The outside temperature is too low or too high.
  • The driver's door has been opened.
  • Low engine operating temperature.
  • Low brake system vacuum.
  • If a road speed of 5 km/h (3 mph) has not been exceeded.
  • The driver's seat belt has not been fastened.

With regards to the rear defrost, I have been using remote start. I'll start it manually from inside the car and see what happens then.
