azedge
Last week I installed a Hidden Hitch and T-One wiring harness on my 2007 SE. The job was pretty simple, just time consuming, as others have noted. It took a little longer for me though, since my hitch was bent from shipping and the horrible packaging it was sent in...but I digress. My concern came when I went to install the T-One harness. I removed the tail lights and found that the main light bulbs on both sides had gotten so hot that they were blackened and even a little melted. Has anyone seen anything like this? The only other problem that I have had is the transmission shifting hard at low speed, otherwise I have 16K on it and rolling!

Hi azedge. :D That has not been a common problem for those with stock bulbs. Did you replace the stock bulbs with aftermarket bulbs? If those are aftermarket replacements, put the stock bulbs back in immediately. If those are stock bulbs, you should immediately bring your car to the Dealer and have the problem corrected. Good luck. :beerchug: Edited June 6, 2008 by bbf2530

KCFlyer
I have not looked at my Edge bulbs, but the vehicle the Edge replaced, a 2007 Freestar, required a taillight bulb replacement just before I turned it in. The socket on the Freestar looked very much like azedge's. There was a distinct burned smell, too. These were stock original bulbs, and the car had around 40,000 miles on it. azedge
Well, just got the call from the service dept. Seems my transmission problem was bigger than I thought. they said the input and output shafts both needed replacement. They said there was a TNB out there, but I forgot to get the number. I will get it. Of course, they have to order the parts and will be here next week. On my other concern, the tail lights, they said that they did not think it was too bad of a problem. They are going to compare the color of the lamps and sockets with a tech's edge that they have at home which matches the year and mileage of mine. I told them of my concern that the bulb is not only discolored, but somewhat melted. They gave me a story about how a lot of Fords are like that and how their car used to blow bulbs all the time. WTF!

WTF! someone over there is smokin crack. "did not think it was too bad of a problem" - those bulb connections are 1 step away from being charred. who cares about the color of the bulb.. the connector is not 'somewhat' melted, the thing IS melted to the point of sagging in the top photos. that looks to me like 1 step away from a bad car fire. this is not about blowing bulbs... that becomes just a side note once you see those connectors. at least you have it on record at the dealer. I just got back from the dealer. I have the car till the tranny parts come in. BTW, they said the TSB was 07-21-11, which supersedes 07-3-11. I asked, how does a normal mechanic look at the tail lights and not think it is not a problem. Their response was "well, they all do that, but they think mine might be a little darker than normal". I am with you, at least it is on record for when you see me, tail lights melted and flames shooting out the back!!! Oh, and on another note. I unwittingly purchased a detail package when I purchased the car. So I decided to have them detail it today. When I got my car back, my Sirius antenna was no longer getting a signal. I had installed my plug and play myself and had the antenna on the corner of the drivers window. Looks like they took a buffer to it and it is dead. Just found a spare antenna and plugged it in and it works fine. Next on the list, I noticed that when I got on the freeway that it sounded like they put a cold air kit in it. When I got home I found the air cleaner lid was not attached. Nice. Also, my FM antenna is missing. What a great day to be me. jpeckinp
When I replaced my tails with the LED's both of mine were burnt also. I have seen it on many cars like this when I worked at a Chevy dealership about 20 years ago. My Edge gets driven mostly at night so the lights are on almost always. azedge
I just took the car back into ford last week because they special ordered the light sockets to replace. They put them on and they did not work. They then sent a guy to another dealership to get a set and then put those on with a new set of bulbs. Took 3 hours. I was sitting there waiting cause I thought it should take less than 30 mins. About an hour an a half into it I asked the service guy WTF was up and he found out what was going on. Peck, what brand of LED's did you put on? Link?

dave-m
I noticed burnt looking sockets when replacing a burnt out rear lamp. I notified the dealer at the next service and they replaced them, no questions asked.
dave-m
I noticed burnt looking sockets when replacing a burnt out rear lamp. I notified the dealer at the next service and they replaced them, no questions asked. update While replacing a tail lamp on the other side this week I noticed the same situation. Out of curiousity I opened the side that was recently replaced and see that it's discoloured again as well. This is less than 3 months later We spoke to the service manager about it and he tells us it appears to be normal for that lamp/socket. It doesn't burn or melt, just discolouration. Seems odd to me, I'll be keeping a close eye on it. Being an electrician by trade, discolouration from heat on an electrical connection is never considered "normal"
FoxGirl
I haven't looked at my tail lights... however my head lights have already been replaced twice because they are cracking on the inside!! 818EDGE
Replaced our burnt out Drivers side tail lamp a few weeks ago. Similar discolorization. Can't wait to look at the other side that hasn't burned out yet to see if it has the same color or if it happens when the bulb fails. Had exactly the same thing with the lights. Right rear went out and found it was burnt and checked left rear and it was burned and blacked also. Took a photo which is attached here and phoned Ford Dealer for warranty/safety concerns and repair. lenko
lenko
Took the car into the local dealership and explained the problem with the lights and showed them the photos. The sockets were replaced on warranty! It's obviously a design problem with over heating tail lamps which also affects the sockets- my opinion, not the official Ford one. Anyways it was looked after under warranty. lenko
