  1. 1. When I change the oil I always

    • Always replace the oil drain plug (and gasket)
      2
    • Replace the drain plug every 2-4 oil changes (or different frequency but not every single time)

I wanted to see what folks here do... I made a pole to help keep track of their thoughts so please fill it in and if you have additional comments of course they are welcome.

I have always replaced the (in my previous vehicles) the copper crush washer every single oil change but I can only find the plastic drain plug and o-ring and not just the o-ring. Granted I think its maybe $10 for it but I was under the assumption that even the dealer doesnt change out the plug.

Personally, Ive done three oil changes (17,000 miles now) and have yet to swap the plug (never leaked) but am thinking about doing it for #4...

Id didn't word that too well (now edited) - I meant to ask if his 2009 has the plastic drain plug.

2009 uses the old type regular drain plug.

The gasket for the plug also comes seperately:

That's what I guessed, but wasn't sure, and in that case it's not really what this thread is about, i.e. the longevity of the plastic drain plug and its O-ring.

I use a Fumoto Drain Valve. Open it up, let the oil drain, then close it up. Never had a problem. Used them on my previous Explorers and now my Edge.

Where did you pick this up from?

I'm also keen to hear this, as I didn't know or expect that they have one for the 2.7L

Judging from the below, you're not using that Furmoto on a 2.7L Edge.

I ran a make/model/year check and it looks like they do have one for the 2.7.

All they show for the 2.7 is valves with 12mm-1.75 Threads, so they're not actually for the 2.7

Correct, they do not have one for the 2.7L twin turbo EB motor....

For Ford 2015 Edge 2.7L V6 Turbo
Unfortunately, this Edge uses a plastic proprietary plug. Better luck next time.
