drs120new
Good Afternoon Folks, I just disabled the ABS system in my 2007 Lincoln MKX because the brakes wouldn't function normally anymore. After reading sverla posts here, I decided to pull the ABS Pump fuse so that I can drive the car. After pulling off the front tires for a closer inspection, I noticed that BOTH front Sensor rings were cracked and slipping on the CV axle. So, here are my questions; 1) Can I drive the car without replacing the axles and just sacrifice the ABS functionality? 2) Is there a way that I can bond (glue) the ring on the axle to prevent the slip? Both axles are perfect except for the cracked sensor rings. I am not going to spend big $$ just to get back ABS which I hate in the first place if I don't have to. Have a Good Day !! jimbop99
I had an Escape and both tone rings cracked and caused the ABS to kick on. I found someone on-line who cleaned up the rust and JB welded the ring back in place. I did this and it had held up for over two years and was still working when I sold the vehicle. I don't know if anyone has tried this with the Edge yet. As far as driving without the ABS enabled, sure you can drive it that way. I drove for years without it because it wasn't invented yet. The only issue is if your state has some form of safety inspection to renew your tags you probable wouldn't pass with the ABS light on. drs120new
I live in NY and just passed inspection, so I have 1 year to figure out what to do. I may just glue the ring on to pass inspection, then disable it again. This sucks.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Since abs and traction control and restraint control all work together, not sure going without abs for longer periods of time is such a good idea. If you are a DIY'r, you can try the tone ring JBWeld type fix, or get cheapie axles from Detroit Axle on eBay (per recommendations from other Edge users).
drs120new
Problem Update: After 100 miles driving with the ABS Pump fuse pulled, the wrench light came on the dashboard. I called my mechanic and he said its because the AWD system relies on wheel sensor data for anti-skid information. So, now I have 3 lights on the dashboard. I decided to to take the SUV to him this morning to change out the 2 half shafts before something else goes wrong. $600 for both half shafts replaced. I'll keep you posted on the repair as time goes by.
PaulSchott
You can just buy new axles for about $100 a pair on EBay made in USA by Detroit axle. They have new tone rings and are complete. Installation is pretty easy if you have the correct tools. Disabling the ABS and traction control is dangerous. You may not like the ABS but it will stop you faster and give you steering control in slippery conditions. My 07 Edge has these replacement axles in it for the last 60,000 miles. They were installed because of a bad CV joint. The quality is top notch.
drs120new
Tone Ring Update: As I mentioned earlier, my mechanic installed 2 rebuilt Motorcraft axles. Put about 150 miles on the car and everything is a Go. Its funny, over the last year it felt like my transmission was slipping when shifting from 2nd to 3rd and only around the 3,000 RPM range, but since this fix everything is running like new again. Can't explain that one, but I'm sure its all related somehow. Enjoy the remainder of summer everyone !!
