lenny44
Please help....the noise is getting worse: I have a 2012 Ford Edge and starting about a year ago...the best way to describe it is when starting the Edge the starting process takes maybe 2-3 seconds for the engine to fully turn ut occasionally (happening more frequently now) the best way I can describe is the starting process continues for several more seconds with what I can best describe as maybe a vacuum noise that continues. it is louder than the normal idle. Now, most times if I step on the gas pedal for a brief second it will stop....sometimes a few seconds. I noticed lately that I will have to tap it 3-5 times and sometimes that still does not work....I end up turning it off and turning it back on....sometime celan...sometimes 3 or 4 taps of the gas pedal. Here is a link to a YouTube Video that has the noise I notice it more in the summer (here in Michigan)....but about the same as hot and cool summer days. Once started, it seems to run fine. It also happens on cold starts (sitting for a long time).....and warm starts (coming out from a store). I spoke with the dealer and they really did not have any thoughts....obviously willing to look at it for their fees. Thanks Len

WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Possibly the starter is continuing to run instead of shutting off once the engine starts? Have you tried locating the source of the noise in the engine bay (w a mechanic's stethescope) while you have someone else start up the car? How many miles on your Edge btw? enigma-2
To me, it sounds like the starter stays engaged after the engine starts. As the starter is controlled by the ECM and there are several sensors telling the ECM when the engine starts, I wonder if the ECM is telling the starter to stop but the starter pnion is sticking.
