my 2012 edge
I have a 2012 edge sel with a v6 with 29k miles when I first start the car on a cold morning I hear a whining noise that goes away when warm. Any ideas if it's the tensioner o r belt any hints to Changi g it thanks
ben senise
is it whining or screeching? loose belts often make a screeching sound, louder when you quickly rev the engine in neutral for example. in my experience though, they don't go away when the engine gets warmer. the solution is to tighten the tensioner and maybe replace the belt if it's showing signs of wear. if it's just a constant whining that changes with RPM, it could anything with bearings where the bearing are shot. alternator, water pump, tensioner pulley, etc. maybe that would go away when the engine warms up but i'm not sure. 29k miles seems very premature for bearings though. if you're not sure about what it is, then i would have a mechanic have a look. if something is making noise, then it needs repairing or replacing. failure at an inopportune moment can be more costly than getting it sorted before it fails.

Power steering pumps are like me, we don't like it when there's hardly any degrees outside so we whine about it. Miner
I also have this issue.... just changed the belt, tensioner didn't appear to be causing any issues when in the workshop and they couldn't effectively demonstrate it, so I declined the replacement as it was 4x more expensive than the labour for the belt change, seemed too much. New belt, first drive from cold it slipped a couple of times briefly, then all ok afterwards. Nothing like before. 2013 Edge Sport 3.7L 200k service just done.
