WWWPerfA_ZN0W
BAMR I can understand, it's a giant piece of glass. But rear window? What the heck is Ford doing with them that would cause this failure? Was it a Ford design or supplier QC at fault?

If it were a supplier QC issue, they probably would have issued a recall or TSB already (since they can charge back the entire scrap and rework cost to the supplier). Wouldn't be the first time I've seen that in the automotive industry
frmichaud
It seems that is a Ford problem, depending Edge serial number they have model A or Model B rear windows installed , one of the model is defective and broke without reason, There is a info to dealer to replace all the rear windows which are broken under waranty, they are so many broken that the new rear windows with out the defect are backordered for a minimum of 3 months
enigma-2
I don't think that it's just a Ford problem, as it happens to a lot of different cars. One reason could be that the back glass is made from tempered glass, not laminated glass. Tempered glass will explode when struck with a sharp or pointed object. The glitch in all of this is, the blow could have happened a year earlier. Because this can happen at any time and by a cause well.out of a manufacturers control, they do not warranty glass. But your insurance company may depending on your policy Edited January 26, 2018 by enigma-2
frmichaud
I received today a Recall letter from Ford code 17B39 which explain what was the problem of the sudent exploding of the rear glass In Canada they put a lot of salt on road and the melting snow or ice with the salt can enter in the rear wiper motor and it become very hot The rear window is at external temperature below zero and the motor is hot result that the rear glass broke with the difference of temperature between both sides The repair is to remove the rear wiper motor, clean it and the axle to remove all trace of salt, install a new bushing in the rear window with silicon grease reinstall the motor and with the silicon grease and the new bushing the salt and water will no longer enter in the motor

bchapman30
This just happened to me yesterday. Closed the driver door and back window just exploded. Ford says there is nothing they will do despite it still being under warranty. There are so many stories circulating about this issue on this year and model that I can’t believe nothing has been done. Ford said that there has never been a recall for this issue. So far this car has been a complete lemon. 2 oil pans and also going in for a third. Also had to replace the steering column. Ford has been terrible through the whole process
frmichaud
I have a Edge Titanium 2016 and the steering wheel with all the electronics has to replaced, the rear windows explode without reason and was replaced under waranty
bchapman30
Holy Cow I’ve had the exact same issues. Had to have the steering column replaced and now the rear window. Ford is saying that the glass must have shattered by something impacting it which isn’t the case as I was right there when it happened. Also going onto my 3rd oil pan as the first two leaked

bchapman30
My dealer told me about the rear glass issue as well but they won’t budge unless Ford gives them the “go ahead”. So frustrating.

cmantis
Is there any way to check this? Mine is 2016 and have to go back to the dealer for few minor repairs. Wondering if this should be asked for.

Yeah no way they give you a new car. The good news is after they repaint the door you won't even notice it. That's an easy repair since they don't have to do any body work.
