Coolpooler
OK, I have the dreaded crack in the front glass of our new Edge's Vista Roof and since Ford Corporate are being dicks and not honoring their warranty I have two questions that I'd like your inestimable help with. I'm thinking of replacing the front glass myself as it looks to be fairly straightforward. Is the part # FT4Z-58500A18-C the complete frame or is it the glass only? The pics on every site I could find wasn't clear and not the actual part itself but a line drawing Is there anything different in removal between the 15-up vs the 2008-up glass? I know the older models could be removed with just 6 bolts, is that the case with the newer version as well? Any other voodoo I should be aware of before I attempt this? OK, three questions... WWWPerfA_ZN0W
FT4Z-58500A18-C looks like the front glass only. No glass insurance? Your auto insurance should cover it, no?
roots57
Here's a video from MACT on servicing the pano moon roof which includes removal of the glass: Is this what you found too? EXPENSIVE!!! $750-$950 each panel. I'd sure hate to have to buy one out-of-pocket for a brand new car, how come they are not covering it under warranty, did you damage it yourself or did it just crack? What about your insurance, glass coverage may cover it even if it was damaged by mistake. There may be a deductible as your insurer may not consider it safety glass and could treat the same as something like body damage due to collision. I just emailed State Farm to make sure mine is covered, got me curious after seeing that price! Anyway, looks like the p/n for the front (moveable) glass panel is FT4Z-58500A18-C and it replaces FT4Z-58500A18-A so it looks like you have the right part number: https://www.oemfordparts.us/oem-parts/ford-sunroof-glass-ft4z58500a18c/?c=aT1NUzE1NTU4NSZyPWxheWVyXzEmYT1mb3Jk Good luck! (sorry WWWPerfA_ZNOW you must have posted right before me) *Update - State Farm just confirmed that it would be a glass claim covered under my policy, should mine crack/break so hopefully you have the same sitch. Coolpooler
Well, crap. That was my suspicion and explains why the dealer adds close to $1000 labour. Ford is saying that they won't cover it as it was due to an impact, but if it was it was incredibly small, as you can't see it with the naked eye. I believe it let go while we driving home Christmas Day , when the temps were in the low -20s. I'll be taking it to a glass shop for a second opinion. Assuming the worst, I was hoping that I could buy the complete front glass sub-assembly and just bolt it in... Full glass coverage in Alberta adds roughly $200/yr to our insurance and your rates go up after 1 claim so it's essentially useless, except in this case...
Coolpooler
Update: Got three quotes and it seems I was mistaken. The front glass is a sub-assembly with the frame and not just a pane of glass. The least expensive quotes here were $1465 CAD so it looks like I'll be ordering one and installing a la MACT's video on Youtube. While I'm at it I will give the tracks a good looking over and lubing if necessary (I hope not with only 3600 miles on the clock....). I will keep the original, clean it out and maybe try my hand at building a carbon fibre panel on it.
vipervenom550
Let me know how the swap goes I my movable and non movable piece just cracked. Have to pay someone to change the non movable but maybe I can save some money by doing the movable myself. I have been told the headliner will need to be dropped to change the back non movable piece. Going to be very pricey to fix all this glass.
roots57
That's a damn shame that this wasn't something either the dealership or your insurance wouldn't cover...especially with only 3600 miles so far...just wrong
Coolpooler
I'm picking up the glass today; from a body shop in town as the dealer wanted $1600 +tax! The plan is to put it in tonight.
omar302
I remember reading somewhere that the 2016 Edge Vista roof switched to a "dual panel" type for sound insulation. Also, there is at least 1 revision to the the part number, Tasca Parts shows FT4Z-58500A18-C as the latest & that it replaces FT4Z-58500A18-A. So make sure you get the latest revision.
Coolpooler
<sigh> So my $1465 quote turned into $1542.15 with freight (The joys of living 3 hours from the nearest major city) so including GST $1619.26, still cheaper than the dealer by about $100+... It was the Rev C glass and I followed MACT's video linked above (Many thanks to MACT for taking the time to make it and roots57 for posting it in this thread). I had the old glass off and the new one in, functioned and cleaned in 45 minutes. A few points to add for the install: I didn't bother taking the -ve terminal off so I didn't reinitialize the sunroof, and I was careful not to move the guides more than absolutely necessary. The front bolts are a combo Torx25/ 8mm hex so when I re-installed them I held them in the 8mm socket on a short extension with a bit of masking tape wrapped around the end to get them started and avoid the hassle of fishing them out as in the vid. If you have an LED headlight it is super handy to give you light in the recesses of the bolt holes and made lining everything up trivial. Since I have the old glass now easily accessible I will be taking some close up pics of the crack and the "impact" point and forward those results to Ford Canada and see if I get any satisfaction from them; I'm not counting on it though. Vipervenom: I would do the front glass myself but it only adds .4-.6 hrs on the bill so if they have the headliner and all the other stuff out it's really not that much to add overall. You might be able to negotiate a bit and see if that will save the difference. Edited January 19, 2018 by Coolpooler

omar302
Van you see the edge of the glass if it is clearly laminated glass? I have not seen one myself (laminated vista roof) so I don't know if it looks like the front side windows where it is clear that they are 2 thin layers with a thinner insert between them.
Coolpooler
As you can see by the label it says "Laminated" but I don't honestly see a difference in the old and new glass physically (Aside from the crack.)
vipervenom550
Carpooler you are right it wasn't that much to get them to install the front while they were changing out the back. The back piece of glass turned out to be almost as much as the front. I think I am at about $2900 for glass plus installation. I am definitely putting some film on the glass to help reduce rock chips and buy additional glass insurance. It actually all getting done this afternoon so I should have it back tomorrow. Also they didn't have to remove the headliner to change the back glass.
Coolpooler
Good to hear, although that's a pretty pricy chunk of change. How's it been holding up? Mine's been good so far..<crosses fingers>
ymerameha
@Coolpooler Do you suddenly have a picture of the detail you ordered? Or from an old broken one. Then I would know what is behind this product code.
Wayne K
what kind of film are you thinking ? I would like that on mine both for protection and darkening some. I am a newbie that greatly enjoyed my VWs sun roofs but I terribly miss being able to control the shade and roof operation seperately.. Ginot1970
Same issue with Ford,, no wattanty replacement . My dealer only quoted me 980 to replace, my insurance wants me to use Safelite, but I'm skeptical they can do the job. Anyone have experience using a glass company to install?
