addisonm06
Hey guys, What is normal coolant temp? I changed coolant this weekend, and it seemed as if coolant never reached above 186 degrees. Is that about right? I never hit any where near the H on the instrument cluster. TheWizard
Are you going by the dash gauge or some other measure? Dash temperature gauges in most domestic vehicles have been nothing more than fancy "idiot lights" for some time now. Manufacturers and dealers got tired of inexperienced owners complaining about the fluctuations of the real gauges so they made them computer controlled to rise to mid-range and stay there unless there was a real problem. The same applies to oil pressure gauges and even voltmeters in some vehicles. Normal temperature is generally close to the rated temperature of the engine thermostat, so 186 degrees would be about normal. The actual temperature will vary depending on ambient temperature and driving conditions. It will often go quite a bit higher (over 200 degrees) in normal operation. If you've ever heard your engine cooling fans kick on then your system has gone above the normal 186 degrees but that is completely normal as long as it cools down again so the dash gauge wouldn't show it. addisonm06
I was using an OBDII scan tool along with Forscan and Torque to monitor it. I believe i saw in one of macbwt video regarding a coolant flush (which i did this weekend) that the thermostat generally opens around 192 degrees. I was driving under normal conditions and also assume the fans kicked on, so i guess i shouldnt be alarmed or worried that it never increased over 186? Possible the OEM thermostat opens at a lower temp that some of the aftermarket ones?
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Different TStat opening temps between Gen 1 and Gen 1.5. Gen 1 opens around 190F, I believe Gen 1.5 around 180F. So 186F is perfectly OK. Most of the time, the temps on my Edge are between 192F and 196F. Higher ambients will raise those numbers a little, about 2F for every 10F ambient rise. macbwt
Depends. But at highway speeds I have one 2011 Edge 3.5 that holds a steady temp of 192-194 degrees at 77 mph. The other Edge runs warmer and can reach up to 199-200 degrees under the same conditions. However the warmer Edge runs a trans temp of 186 degrees and the cooler Edge runs 200 degrees for transmission temp. Give and take essentially.

Just trying to see if there is a reason, I know both your Edges are FWD, but do any have the Tow Package?
macbwt
Just trying to see if there is a reason, I know both your Edges are FWD, but do any have the Tow Package? No tow for either. I feel the Edge with the higher engine temp needs more highway as all it does is MOMBUS duty and idles 90 percent of the time.
