I recently changed oil at 1000 miles on my new 2016 edge sport that has the 2.7 ecoboost. Overall, it was a fairly simply process. However, I discovered some torn pieces of rubber/silicone material stuck in the oil filter element and also at the bottom of the housing assembly. The old filter had 3 O-ring gaskets which I replaced with 3 new gaskets so they were intact and not torn. I don't know where these pieces could have come from. Infant little worried if something broke somewhere and bits and pieces were circulated with the oil. Would appreciate if someone can chime in! Pictures shows the gasket like material discovered. These are not plastic pieces from the filter assembly. They are softer rubber like pieces. I couldn't find any other gaskets at the bottom once I cleaned the housing. From my understanding there are only 3 gaskets that is supposed to be replaced and the filter cap itself doesn't have a gasket of its own? 1STSFG Posted September 23, 2017 Report Share Posted September 23, 2017 The filler cap has a yellow o ring that shouldn't ever need to be replaced unless it somehow becomes damaged. If this is the cars first oil change,its not totally unusual to find "manufacturing"' pieces in the oil pan. Hard to tell if they ever accumulate in the spin off filters. I'd take them to the local service manager for documentation considering your still under warranty. edge_st Posted September 23, 2017 Author Report Share Posted September 23, 2017 (edited) Yes, it was its first oil change. The yellow drain plug O ring was perfect. These bits and pieces were found at the bottom of the oil filter housing next to engine. I did clean it and put a new filter back with new O rings. I want to believe that these are just excess gasket material from somewhere. Hopefully wont have any affect on the engine longevity. The weird part is that the filter and the filter assembly are all hard plastic except for the three O rings thats seals them in place. All those were intact when I changed them. These pieces are definitely from somewhere else. Looks like broken pieces or a rubber gasket.
