New Owner of Old Edge

Hello all:

An introduction of myself:

I'm new to this forum, although I registered about a month ago when I first test drove a Ford Edge. As a result, I'm now the new owner of a second-hand 2011 Edge SEL FWD.

I never owned a Ford before, although my very first car was an 88 Mercury Topaz. At the time, I barely knew anything about cars; just put gas and drive ;) It lasted me no much more than a year; all rusted out. So, as I was not happy with so much rust in that make (remember, I didn't know anything about cars; ...and still don't know much anyway ;), I steered away of that make complettely and since then I have been an avid and enthusiastic driver of Chrysler: 93 Concorde, 02 Trepid SE and 04 Trepid SXT, which is currently undergoing repair (still loving it). Then I briefly switched to VW (but didn't like it), and looking to trade my Jetta for another car while my Trepid continued giving me headaches, I made the mistake to test drive a Ford Edge... Wow! It instantly got me! That's it! ;)

I have a bunch of questions that I'll spread out in different posts and threads. I hope that you folks will welcome me and my questions (and hopefully my old Edge as well ;), and answer most of them to speed up my learning process about what appears to be a fantastic vehicle for the "affordable" market.

Thank you all in advance.

I don't consider 2011 as old. Mine is a 2007 and I still love it. I was a GM guy before my wife's Chevy Lumina. BIGGEST POS . Turn the directional on and the handle fell off in your hand. 45,000 miles and head gaskets went and took out the motor. This was and American Hugo equivalent. Ford has been ok. Just remember to change antifreeze trans fluid and oil regularly.

Chrysler owner, eh? Hmmm ... Hmmmm .... Ok, I will allow it as you claim the LH cars, the 3.3L being the only worthy engine IMHO.

Welcome to the community, post pics of your newly acquired Edge, search the forums and ask questions at will :)

Agree, I had a 93 Concorde with a 3.3L engine. Awesome! Transmission failed @ 260K; floor rusted out... Then I changed to the Intrepid (3.5L) which was doing good until a couple of days ago when the water pump broke. What a pain the work to replace it!

Thanks for the welcome. No pictures to post yet, but I have been searching the forum for the past month or so to educate myself; awesome people around here.

Few questions coming soon.

Thanks.

Good to know! You have actually pointed out four of the first five questions I'll have for this forum. My understanding is that this subforum is not intended for technical questions. So, I'll post them where appropriate but here it's a snapshot:

- longevity: glad to know your 2007 is still nice 10 years after. I need to find out if people apply anticorrosion oil treatments and any concerns when perforating/drilling frames (with wiring, sensors, etc) to treat rust inside panels.

- antifreeze: should it be changed even if testing still reads OK?

- trans fluid: the owner's manual reads to change it at 240 thousand Kilometers. Should it be changed before? (Mine has 165 thousand Kilometers).

- engine oil: I visited the Ford dealer yesterday and I was very surprised to find out that they do not use full synthetic but blend oil for the change. Will I be wasting my money on full synthetic oil change? They explained me that full synthetic is not needed for older engines; that can actually be detrimental because the pistons are worn and the "tolerance" (or something like that) is greater; therefore the pistons remain less lubricated at start up with synthetic oil... (?)

- my fifth question will be regarding headlights replacement. Stock sucks and I'm concerned with poor visibility for wildlife at night and snow storms here in Canada.

Again, I don't expect to have answers nor discussions in this subforum. I'll search for these topics first, and post my questions if can't find answers previously posted.

Thanks a lot.

Please post your questions in the appropriate forum and we'll be happy to assist.

Just a FYI on the oil - all factory Fords get Motorcraft synthetic blend oil. We can save the discussion on whether it's better to switch to full synthetic for the other topic.

Hi:

Sorry, English is not my first language and I don't understand what you mean with "save the discussion... for the other topic". Do you mean that I should not discus that subject just because Ford says to use its own brand of oil?

I just posted some questions, but unfortunately I later realized that I posted in the wrong subforum. I'm still trying to get familiarized with the layout in this forum. I'll delete my post and repost it in the correct subforum, I hope.

Thank you.

Fluid film for exterior surface rust protection. Not sure about treating drilled areas or the insides of panels. Paint/dielectric grease/quality rubber grommets/???

Antifreeze/coolant should be changed out regularly, at the very LATEST at Ford's recommended intervals, I think first change is 105K miles, remainder every 50K miles thereafter. I would go so far as to say the FIRST change and EVERY change should be at 50K-60K miles or every 80-100K kilometers. A commonly available tester does not test the additives in the coolant, just the specific gravity. You can get coolant strips, but they STILL will not test the additives. Easy enough to change out the coolant, just do it.

Trans fluid: Ford oversells the life of the fluid, saying it will go 150K miles. Yeah? Do you see them offering warranty past 150K miles. That will be the day. Anyhoo, same recommendation as coolant. Every 50-60K miles. And if it has not been changed at 150K+ miles, change immediately, and then at 30K miles after, then resume 50-60K mile changes. Again, additives. They get depleted, crud builds up, gums up sensors, prevents smooth operation, ultimately wearing down the mechanicals unnecessarily.

Engine oil: Synthetic Blend is "good enough", it does work well in the naturally aspirated engines. Although at higher mileage, past 100K, I would definitely move up to full synthetic brand name oil. Forced induction engines? Full synthetic all the way. If you start using "High Mileage" oils, it is a one way street, you cannot go back to regular oil So NOT recommended as routine maintenance. Use the Motorcraft filters, they get oil the quickest to every part of the engine on startup. Rattlefree operation FTW!

Headlights: Use high output halogens, I assume you do not have HIDs due to being in Canada? H9 bulbs can be substituted in some applications for higher output. Not sure how the assembly will do with the extra heat of the H9.

My short answer to your snapshot :)
