edgemaster
Hi, One year ago (July 2016) I received a letter from Ford about the airbag recall for my 2007 Edge. Since then I haven'd heard a beep from them and the guys at the Ford dealership I purchased the car from only shrug their shoulders. Is there any way to find out what in the world is going on here? Thanks, Ed
akirby
What in the world is going on is millions of vehicles that need new airbags - it will take years to get them all replaced. It's not just Ford - it's numerous mfrs using takata airbags.
edgemaster
Is Takata the only airbag manufacturer in the world? This issue has been going on so long, there was plenty of time to find several replacement manufacturers if Ford would care about the life of their customers. Heck, they could've started their own manufacturing in one of their plants.
Xtra
I recieved that recall and Galpin Ford did the fix in less than 4 weeks after I contacted them. Edited August 22, 2017 by Xtra
edgemaster
Lucky Guy! Ā My wife is in Real Estate and she frequently has to drive clients around (I understand the passenger airbag is the culprit). Is Ford taking responsibility if something serious happens? I think not but they might look at another very expensive lawsuit.

Different recall than the OP is talking about. 2007 versus 2016 model years.
Quila
Is Takata the only airbag manufacturer in the world? This issue has been going on so long, there was plenty of time to find several replacement manufacturers if Ford would care about the life of their customers. Heck, they could've started their own manufacturing in one of their plants. Ā The Takata airbag recall affects over 100 million airbag inflators worldwide (some vehicles have multiple airbags affected by the recall) affecting 19 different car manufacturers. Takata filed for bankruptcy a couple months ago in Japan and USA because of all the recalls and associated lawsuits. Takata's largest competitor, Key Safefy Systems, bought Takata's assets is continuing to manufacture inflators for the recalls. Apparently there are other inflator manufacturers getting involved now as well to help speed things up, but it's going to take a while to get all those airbags replaced. Ā If you Google "Takata airbag recall" you should find a lot more detail including areas that are being prioritized for replacement airbag inflators (the problem is worse in high humidity / high temperature conditions). This isn't just a Ford problem.
akirby
And to put that in perspective - they only make around 16M new vehicles per year and they have to continue to supply the new vehicles while making additional replacements. Even with additional factories and resources it will take years.
edgemaster
Well, if something happens with my wife's car, Ford will look at a nice lawsuit.

PaulSchott
I just got a new notice about the airbag recall. Ford is anticipating replacements available in the spring. My car is originally from Louisiana and then Arizona. It is now in Connecticut. I was told that Louisiana puts in in first place for the recall. I think that the lawyers told them to write this letter because they state that until the air bag is replaced you shouldn't have passengers in the front seat. and that this would deactivate the airbag. I think they are full of *%$#. They just want to tell you not to use the front seat and if you do it's your fault. If I ever see the replacement I'll be 100. WWWPerfA_ZN0W
They could just as easily have offered to remove it or deactivate the occupant classification sensor upon owner request. Not a great option either, but more liveable than a mandate preventing use of the pass seat. I still do not have the recall for the driver airbag addressed. So 2 missiles in my case.
PaulSchott
I just let my mother-in-law sit there.
edgemaster
I got a similar letter about availability next year, I believe it when I see it. Them asking that nobody uses the passenger seat for almost 2 years is beyond laughable. I guess the occasional law suit because of bodily harm or death is cheaper than making a real effort to help their customers. Ed
hilokamper
If you haven't heard Takata is in Bankruptcy proceedings. This might be slowing down some replacements, but car manufactures are still on the hook to repair/repair under federal recalls. enigma-2
Most of the airbags are coming for other manufacturers. I expect mine to be replaced in late 2024 or early 2025. (snort).
