addisonm06
This might sound weird, but im experiencing an issue with the MPG reporting. Ill reset the MPG and show an average around 22MPG for about 1k miles. Than it will instantly jump to 28MPG. I know that is NOT what i am getting. The only way to fix it is to reset the tripometer again. Has anyone experienced this?
RC Mike
It's an average, so when you reset it it'll display what you're getting at the moment. Over time, the average will become more... average.
addisonm06
i understand that. But after about 300 miles or so it levels out (to where it doesnt fluctuate as much). The jump from 22MPG-28MPG instantly isnt an average leveling out; its just not normal. Than the only way to get an accurate reading is to reset it. I dont think i have ever heard of a FWD SE getting 28MPG; just doesnt sound accurate, and the 5 years i have owned it, i have never gotten that good of mileage. RC Mike
So track it by hand and compare.
TourGuide
If you do as RC Mike suggests you'll probably find that it is off from the actual by a couple of mpg over the course of a tank or so. Want to have some fun? Try this - go to the top of a hill somewhere and at the top reset your trip meter - then coast down the hill and see what your mpg is when you get to the bottom. Think this is your actual mpg reading? It probably is not. I think (and others are suggesting this here too) that this is the phenomenon you are experiencing with your readings. It should become more 'normal' the further you travel down the road with the reset trip meter values. addisonm06
MPG jumped from 21.7 to 29.2 yesterday; out of nowhere. Seems to occur around 1k miles on tripometer. I cant imagine that the leveling out is such a noticeable difference and the irony of occurrence around the same length of time seems consistent. addisonm06
So i did my own calculation the last 2 fill ups. The actual MPG ( Miles driven on actual tank of gas) is 22.4. The digital readout is showing 28.7. I know obviously the digital readout is not correct. Does anyone have an idea what controls the digital readout or if it is computer related? macbwt
What time frame for capture of the mileage do you have it set at? 5min 10min or 30min?
addisonm06
Maybe im ignorant, but how is that controlled/set? I do not see any settings on the OSD to change it. Edited August 23, 2017 by addisonm06
macbwt
If you do not have a limited then this is not an option for adjustment.
RC Mike
Are your tires the right size?
omar302
If you do not have a limited then this is not an option for adjustment. An SEL with MyFord Touch would also have that menu. By they way, though you probably already know it, the first fuel economy screen, the one that has a moving bar for current fuel economy and has an average economy, this average is reset by holding the "Ok" button for a few seconds & is not related to the 2nd screen bars which have the time frame option (5, 10, 30)
enigma-2
Ill reset the MPG and show an average around 22MPG for about 1k miles. Than it will instantly jump to 28MPG. I've read that the average MPG is a running average until it gets about 1000 miles in its memory.

addisonm06
Th I've read that the average MPG is a running average until it gets about 1000 miles in its memory. Enigma, can you help me understand this a bit better? Why would it not be a running average after 1000 miles?
akirby
Pretty sure it's always a running average of the last 500 or 1000 miles.
omar302
The running average is for the distance to empty calculation, as far as I thought I knew, while the one you reset is to as far as you go since your last reset.
macbwt
Once you reset and fill the tank the mileage to empty will be based on the mileage from the last trip before you reset it.
macbwt
my overall mpg is 23.4 mpg based on a 5k mile run currently as monitored in my Trip #2 function. I reset Trip #1 each tank.
akirby
Oops, I was getting DTE and MPG confused. You're right on the DTE being the last 1000 miles while mpg is since the last reset.
addisonm06
I can use either trip 1 or trip 2 to monitor it. It really doesnt make a difference though. I just cannt see how 28.7 MPG is at all close to accurate over 1500 miles driven. I find it oddly weird that it out of no where jumps from 22-28. Its a sporadic increase during my commute after the tripometer is reset. I believe i noticed it previously around 1k running miles after reset. WWWPerfA_ZN0W
May need a fuel pump/sender if the electrical connections are otherwise in working order.
