nittanydoug
I have the opportunity to buy a 2014 Edge SEL fwd. Not all of the options, just 205 package pretty much. It has low low miles as it was an old person's car. Yes I'm partial to picking up Grandma's cars. I'm currently in a 2009 Buick lacrosse that had 8,000 miles when I got it a few years ago. Great car but I'm put a bunch of miles on it as I was traveling alot for work. I've done a fair amount of maintenance. From struts to plugs to lock actuators. I love the size and we need it with 2 kids and thier gear. Toddlers non the less. So how are families using these? Enough room? I hate to go to a car payment again when what I have works if not perfect. Thanks in advance.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Welcome in, Doug, I do hope you end up buying the Edge Off topic, but are you a Penn State-r by any chance? J/C due to the username.
nittanydoug
That I am. Grew up about an hour away and it was a natural fit as it had the best program in the country for what I went into. I'm debating the purchase. A little over 8,000 miles on it. It's the president of my company's mom's car. It's a decent deal not giving it away but a couple Grand cheaper than the local dealers. I just want to have some more space for the kids stuff. Plus I'm over having a sedan. I mean the Buick is fine. Rides decent etc and that is something I don't want to give up.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Does it have the 3.5 or the 2.0Ecoboost engine? I hold nothing against the 2.0, but the 3.5 is a proven performer, requires pretty much routine maintenance to run well & for long. What is the warranty situation on this Edge? You can get extended protection direct from Ford, if that is what you prefer.
chefduane
Does it have a maintenance record that you can look at? Regular oil changes, ATF, coolant, etc. And 8k miles in 2-3 years nothing. If its been well maintained it sounds like it might be a good fit for your family. But be warned, once you start reading some of the mods/add-ons/extras that the folks here have done, it can become an obsession! PS: Have had the chance to meet Sean Lee and his wife few times. Great guy - built like a rock. (Wife ain't so bad either.) Go Cowboys!!!
nittanydoug
It's the 3.5. It may have maintenance records but at 8,000 miles I'm not expecting much other than an oil change and a tire rotation. It would have the balance of the factory warranty. I'd doubt that they purchased any extended warranty as she didn't drive much. Chef, I've already read too many threads. I have a Rhino Rack box that I use on the Buick for week long vacations (and to put my golf clubs in when we go up North for the weekend) that I'm already thinking I need the side rails. Mainly because I wouldn't have to buy new cross bars, just new feet for it. Then there is the sync3 upgrade. I don't mind the $600 price range but the $1,800 price of the ones on ebay, ouch! I got spoiled by replacing the Buick's radio with a Kenwood Nav unit so I could have a back-up camera, xm radio and then I got into the HD radio once my commute shrank. There are still alot of decent people at the school and plenty of them had zero to do with the recent scandals. So it's tough to take the heat of the scandal when there are still good people there doing good things. I met a few players there in my day. Most memorable was LaVarre Arrington. While he didn't pan out so well in the pro's he was a giant dude on a college campus.
akirby
the 3.5 is a proven performer, requires pretty much routine maintenance to run well & for long. Except for the water pump issue....
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Routine maintenance *cough hack wheeze* will keep that water pump going. 105K is NOT the only interval Ford specifies for the first coolant change. nittanydoug
I'll have to dig a little more into the coolant change thing. I know any coolant change is messy. I drove it this morning. The good stuff, pretty clean, nice and tight inside. No wear. The bad - couple door scuffs, nothing too deep, couple rock chips, only one key and no remote start. I made him an offer. He's going to see what his brother thinks.
