jonesboys310
I know there is a lot of discussion on here about replacing struts and shocks, but I'm curious to see which way to go... are the KYB's any better than Motorcraft? I can get OEM Motorcraft for about $50 cheaper than KYB, so is it worth the money or stick with Motorcraft. I'm looking at struts, Motorcraft strut mounts, and shocks. Thanks! WWWPerfA_ZN0W
I know macbwt does like the KYBs, but you won't go wrong with Motorcraft if you choose to go that route. Make sure they are the right ones for your Edge. Struts are different for vehicles with 22" wheels compared to w/out, for example.
chefduane
Agree. Prolly can't go wrong with either one. I bought a set of KYB's from a member here for $90 new still in the box. I probably won't need them for another 50k miles or so but it was too good a price to pass up. I'm not sure if I should go with Motorcraft shocks on the rear or buy a pair of KYB's and stay KYB all around. If money is the issue, I agree with PerfA. Go with the Motorcrafts. Can't go wrong.
macbwt
Two thoughts. My Edge I like the firmer ride and go with this set up. Motorcraft strut bearing mounts, KYB struts and shocks all around. I tend to be a slightly more aggressive driver than my wife. Wife's Edge will be Motorcraft shocks and struts all around with motorcraft strut bearing mounts. She likes the smoother ride. Do not go after market with Strut bearing mounts. I have tried many and ended up finding the Motorcraft strut bearing mounts are much more durable.
jonesboys310
I will definitely be going with Motorcraft Strut mounts, this is my wife's car, she does prefer a smoother ride, so I May stick with Motorcraft, and yes I have seen the wheels do make a difference in struts, I called the local Ford parts store for the Motorcraft parts. Surprisingly it's only $289 for shocks, struts, and strut mounts, all Motorcraft. I know that you have stated to go with the moog sway bar links, is that because the Motorcraft is inferior or the moog is just a better option? chefduane
IIRC the Moog has a zerc so it is greaseable. The Motorcraft doesn't. Also, the Moogs tend to be a bit beefier.
Deanf
Hi, I have a 2014 Edge SEL and it needs new shocks and struts. I was on RA and settled on KYB strut plus (with the springs). I'm wondering if I put Motorcraft shocks in the back, will it feel weird, or do you think it will be ok? I read that the KYB's are a little more stiff than OEM. I also read someone having a concern that getting the pre assembled kits for the struts could change the height from OEM. Any thoughts on that? I dont need the new springs, but I am just trying to get the job done fast and not mess with the spring compressors TIA Dean
fishx65
I just used a cheap spring compressor kit from AA to do upper strut mounts on my 2011 SEL and was surprised how quick and easy it was. The 11-14 Edge's have pretty stiff suspensions to begin with so I wouldn't mind finding shocks and struts that soften things up a bit. Yeah, I have done the whole spring compression on an old '88 pontiac 6000 when i was in collage. It's not horrible and I can do it, i just wanted to get it done fast. I figured that if i get a quick strut, everything is new. If I could find a motorcraft quick strut for my car, I would probably just do that. My main concern is that I don't want to go stiffer than OEM when all is said and done. That being said, maybe my best bet is to get morotcraft strut and a spring compressor. I am wondering if I decide to just replace the strut and use all the other parts, is it a good idea to replace anything else? the upper mount, dust covers, bumpers ect. I wish I knew more. lol

macbwt
I replace strut bearing mount every time I replace struts. By the way I just replace a set at 80K miles and they would not even extend out for 10 minutes. So change them at least every 60K miles otherwise they are just place holders after that.
