atekido
Hello Everyone, just joining up to hopefully attain some knowledge on the 2015+ 2.7 Ecboost Edge Sport. I currently Drive a 2015 Mustang GT and have always been in some muscle/sports car. just to list a few previous vehicles 2005 5.3L V8 Grand prix GXP, 2001 Trans am 5.7L V8 , 2009 Nissan 370z 3.7 v6, 2009 Pontiac G8 GT 6.0L V8. As I have got older and started owning houses and moved up north to Nebraska I have started to realize the headaches of not having something that can tow a trailer or haul a decent amount of junk. or get around better in not so nice weather. After searching most SUV/cross overs between all of them the Edge with the 2.7 seems to be the one option that would satisfy my performance thirst and not break the bank and still get decent gas mileage. Austin
I'm a new soon to be (next week) 2017 2.7 Eco Edge. I don't think this is the one you want if you want to tow a trailer. I believe the limit on the 2.7 is 2,000 lbs. Get the NA V6 if you want to tow more (3,500 lbs.). I have a small HF fold-up utility trailer that I plan on towing with mine (although finding a hitch that goes on without mods and causing problems with the motion sensor is still an issue), but I don't plan on towing more than 1,200 lbs, as that is the limit on my trailer anyway. akirby
There isn't really a limit on the 2.7L - you just can't get the tow package on the sport.
Austin
You may want to take a look at this: https://www.ford.com/resources/ford/general/pdf/towingguides/16rv&tt_ford_edge_sep28.pdf
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
That is for marketing purposes. But the Sport can tow just as well as the 3.5L Edge can, no worries. You just have to get an aftermarket hitch for it. Welcome, atekido, good luck in your search. You can def get some good mileage from the Sport, but the heavier your right foot, the more you are in the "needs a tune" category, which can deliver performance AND better mpg Stock tunes on the EB tend to run quite rich. akirby
You may want to take a look at this: https://www.ford.com/resources/ford/general/pdf/towingguides/16rv&tt_ford_edge_sep28.pdf Read note #2 - there is no factory tow package for the sport model, thus it gets the same 2k rating as any Edge without the tow package. It's not the engine.
akirby
The old Sport with the 3.7L had the exact same restriction.
Austin
Good to know then. I still don't plan on towing more than 1,200 with it, but that is due more to my trailer restriction. The HF 4'x8' fold-up trailer is great because it stores in the garage taking up very little space, and just takes a few minutes to setup. Nice to have to haul dozens of bags of mulch every spring, and all of those other things far too big to get in the car. It keeps me from needing to buy a truck; which isn't something I want to have to drive everyday.
omar302
Also the same 2.7L in the current Sport and the 3.7L from the previous Sport on the mechanically identical MKX when equipped with the Tow package were rated for 3500 lbs. Ford just doesn't want to offer the Tow Package on the Sport. Also, note that the Tow Package's mainly adds additional cooling, so it is NOT recommended to tow more than 2000 lbs in the Sport due to lack of the additional cooling. enigma-2
Also, note that the Tow Package's mainly adds additional cooling, so it is NOT recommended to tow more than 2000 lbs in the Sport due to lack of the additional cooling. Wasn't that true of all models and engines? To get 3.5k you need to have factory tow package. With an aftermarket hitch, the car's are rated at 2k. omar302
enigma, yes that's true, was just stating how obvious that the Sport not being offered the tow package was not engine related and that it was specific to the Sport trim. Though for the <2015 MKX, you couldn't get the tow package with 22" wheels, so that might be a reason for 2011-2014 Edge Sport since they came standard with 22" wheels. But it doesn't explain the 2015+ since it comes standard with 20" wheels. Edited due to typos. Edited May 12, 2017 by omar302
akirby
We always thought it was because of the bumper trim not supporting the factory hitch rather than a mechanical issue. But nobody really confirmed that. Additional cooling is the biggest reason you want the factory tow pkg - adding the hitch is easy.
Austin
So then to clarify, for the OP and myself, if you are getting a 2.7 (which is only available on the Sport), then the Towing Package isn't available. This means that you don't get the additional cooling needed in order to properly support towing 3,500 lbs. Your maximum towing rating is 2,000 lbs, and anything above that; use at your own risk. If you tow above 2,000 lbs. with the 2.7 (Sport), then your warranty may be voided. The PDF from Ford that I posted above I believe is still the best guide to follow for tow rating information.
