How sensitive is the Perimeter Alarm? (2016)

Recommended Posts

I was curious about the perimeter alarm on my 2016 Edge Titanium so I went up to the car and started banging on it. No alarm. If I hit it any harder, I'll break it. I also tried leaving the window open and reaching into the car as if I were stealing something. Still no alarm.

The brochure for the 2016 Edge lists it as standard equipment on the Titanium. I'm beginning to wonder if my car has it or not. Shouldn't the alarm go off if I reach in the car? I understood that it had some kind of sensor in the interior to detect movement. The Owner's Manual doesn't really say anything about the Perimeter Alarm. In fact, the word "perimeter" only appears once in reference to the tires.

Anyone have experience with this?

As far as I know, Perimeter Alarms on Fords are monitor Doors, Lift-gate & Hood. If any is opened the alarm will sound. The impact sensor is an add-on, not factory installed. But maybe for 2015+ that changed as I remember reading on some security option available for them.

I guess you guys are right. Thanks for your input.

But don't ALL car alarms sound when you open a door, hood, liftgate, etc.? Why call it a "perimeter" alarm? Seems like marketing bs to me and I'm a bit disappointed.

At one time Ford was selling a base alarm that did not include the doors, hood or liftgate. I forgot what they called it nor do I remember exactly what it did monitor, but that was probably just their way of distinguishing it from the base alarm. I agree it doesn't make much sense.

Definition of "Perimeter" is: "the continuous line forming the boundary of a closed geometric figure."

So it makes sense that they mean it does NOT moniter inside the vehicle nor glass breakage that does not technically change the perimeter of the vehicle. Or at least as akirby stated, to differentiate between this system & the older "PATS" (passive anti-theft system) or more advanced systems with interior, breakage, impact or tilt sensors.

If I memory serves me right, it was also called perimeter alarm on the 99 Mercury Sable my family had those days.
