lildisco Posted April 3, 2017 Report Share Posted April 3, 2017 I been looking around for pad upgrade as the stock pads coat the inside & outside of the wheels in like a grease like substance. I'm pretty sure that the pads are really cheap & putting out a crap ton of brake dust. The Edge has slightly over 13,000 & I've cleaned the wheels AT LEAST 10 times probably more in the past year of ownership. I've tried wheel wax & it doesn't help. Figured I'd change the pads out since front & rear should be around $100. Problem is, new vehicle, less options. I've been looking at Centric & Hawk as I've had great experience with then in the past, but i know a ceramic pad is going to give off less dust. At this point, I'm willing to try nearly any brand that will provide slightly better braking & hopefully a lot less dust. According to Centric, there's a part # 105.18180, but nothing is available at this time. According to Hawk, there's nothing available, even for a 2015. According tirerack.com, there's pads available, but seem to be for the previous gens. I'm pretty sure that brakes were redesigned on the 2015's & up, so i think that there's nothing currently available for the latest Edge's out of my preferred brands. So, i guess my question is, has anyone had any success with replacing their current pads? I know that it's a long shot, but figured it was worth a shot. WWWPerfA_ZN0W Posted April 3, 2017 Report Share Posted April 3, 2017 I would add a bit to your work. Coat your wheels with a sealant, and also the liner. Will be much easier to clean off afterwards regardless of pad choice. If Raybestos Police pads were available for the Edge, I would use those. BUT EBC yellowstuff, Hawk HP/HPS, Carbotech Bobcat pads are great options. Probably will have to call up the mfr and see if they have a product. It may be listed for Mazda but not for Ford, for example. Ceramics are harder on rotors, I am not sure OEM rotors are high-carbon. lildisco Posted April 3, 2017 Author Report Share Posted April 3, 2017 I've used Chemical Guy's Wheel wax on them & it doesn't help. Any other suggestion for a sealant? I figured with the low mileage on the car & it not being a track car, simply changing the pads would be all that's necessary. I mean literally all 4 corners deal with excessive brake dust, the fronts are worse than the rears obviously, but this is ridiculous. Guess it's a wait & see kinda thing. WWWPerfA_ZN0W Posted April 3, 2017 Report Share Posted April 3, 2017 I would think you need something at least as resistant as JetSeal. My preference leans towards CarPro and Opti products. HydrO2 is an easy to apply product, and not very expensive. You can seal the entire exterior of your car with it, very friendly product. I'm going to apply it to the summer wheels sometime this week & when the winter come off, I'll apply it to them. lildisco Posted May 18, 2017 Author Report Share Posted May 18, 2017 (edited) The Cquartz Dlux stuff seems to help with cleaning, if the wheels can be hit with a power washer, but the parts not hit with the power washer, need to be cleaned. Better, but not ideal. Seeing how Centric now makes rotors now, I'll probably swap them out as well. I think that I'm going with Centric Rotors (12561118) for the fronts & Powerstop pads (Z231818) for the fronts as well. Thoughts? Centric also makes a pad (10516650). Any have any experience with them? Looking for the same, if not better, than OEM EDIT: 12561118 Is the correct part # for a non Sport Edge. 12561120 'appears' to be for a Edge Sport(Didn't know anybody around to confirm). Waiting for the Rotors to arrive. They should be here Friday. lildisco Posted May 27, 2017 Author Report Share Posted May 27, 2017 (edited) Rotors arrived today, unfortunately, they're too big, even though it says for 18 inch wheels. I quickly ordered Centric 12561118 rotors, they were slightly cheaper than the other ones. Called a few friends & they said that it shouldn't be an issue to use the new pads on the old, factory rotors. I'm obviously going swap them out whenever the replacement rotors get here & re preform the pad bedding procedure. I will advise that the 16 Edge's (non sport) use an 11mm / 7/16 Hex head to get the calipers off. I also found that to get the little metal retainer out is to push in on the little indent & push it towards the top of the caliper & it should pop right off. The normal process is to turn rotors before using new pads so they get bedded in properly. But yeah, for a very short time, probably ok, though there will likely be some grabbiness. There was the occasional grabbiness with all OEM stuff. In 6 days of driving, the wife hasn't said anything about grabbing. The handful of times I've driven it, it seems to brake like a normal vehicle. The Centric Rotors were delivered today & promptly installed this evening. Cleaned everything up with brake cleaner & bedded the pads. Pretty happy with the purchase & would recommend them to any Gen 2 Owners that can't stand the vast amounts of oem brake dust. The wife took a trip up to Michigan a few months ago & had to make a few 75-0 stops & was very happy with the performance.
