CivicSi907
I want to know if I can use TPMS Sensor of the 2011+ Models on my 2007 Ford Edge? The Part number of the 2011 model is 9L3Z1A189A And of the 2007-2010 Model is 7L1Z1A189A. I am asking because I can get the TPMS Sensors of the 2011+ model much cheaper. WWWPerfA_ZN0W
I would think so, as long as the frequency is the same. Will likely have to retrain them once they are installed.
enigma-2
Both are 315 mHz. Difference appears to be the size and type of wheel they fit (chromed plated or machined aluminum wheels). May want to talk with your local dealers parts department to see if they work with your particular car. For example, the 7L1Z1A189A sensor is designed for the 2007 Edge with 17" wheels, 18" machined aluminum wheels & 20" wheels.
omar302
2007 models used band style sensors. 2011+ use stem mounted sensors. Though they work on the same frequencies, they are different. Found an eBay listing for aftermarket replacements for the 2007 that changes them from band style to stem mounted, but the compatibility list doesn't show any new models, leaving me to believe they don't interchange. CivicSi907
So I can't use the 2011 Sensor on my 2007 edge with 20" aluminum wheels?
omar302
I can't say, I don't have a definite answer. My guess is that OEM 2011 specific sensors wouldn't work on your 2007.
CivicSi907
And some afternarket sensors? I need this as cheap as possible.
omar302
Aftermarket should work if they are specified for your year, like the ones & linked to in my above post.
Waldo
You cannot mix the factory band and stem sensors. So you cannot use the factory sensor from a 2011 on a 2007. But there are plenty of cheap aftermarket ones that will work.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Any insight into why, Waldo? Is it a hardware or a programming issue?
akirby
Any insight into why, Waldo? Is it a hardware or a programming issue? The vehicle sensors must be different.
Waldo
Actually it's just a programming issue. You can reconfigure the BCM to accept the other type of sensors, though you'd need to know exactly which parameter to change. It's all a bunch of hex code, not something that will pop up on a menu somewhere.
akirby
Ahh....that makes more sense.
enigma-2
I was curious and looked these up again, only looked up by 2007 Edge instead of models. Used O'Riely Auto parts. Both stem mounted and band mounted are listed a working. They also advertise that they (as keast the stem mounted) didn't require programming. I'm guessing that in 2007 it was OEM to use s band, but looks like both versions can be used now. (And I agree with checking out Ebay. Amazon as well, as O'Brian is expensive). http://m.oreillyauto.com/h5/r/oap/site/c/search/TPMS+Sensor/05430/C0337.oap?year=2007&make=Ford&model=Edge&vi=1434489&reset=true
chefduane
If expense is an issue, why not just go without? Can't just a regular valve stem be used?
macbwt
I know of a guy that installed Stem TPMS on his 2010 Edge which were banded. No issues at all and they work. The only difference is how they are mounted. The PCM will read them as nothing has changed but how they are attached.

The only difference is how they are mounted. The PCM will read them as nothing has changed but how they are attached. Well it's true the PCM doesn't care at all in how they are attached, the only difference is in the first couple of characters of the signal that the sensors transmit. A 2010 Edge is programmed to look for sensors that transmit something like say "ABC" at the beginning of the message. Ford's OEM band sensors transmit "ABC". Ford's OEM stem sensors transmit "XYZ". So they would never be recognized by the BCM on a 2010 unless the BCM is re-configured to look for "XYZ". What I suspect is that a lot of the newer sensors are probably programmed to transmit both "ABC" and "XYZ", so that they will work on either one. But you can't take the old Ford OEM sensors and make them work on a band sensor vehicle without a reprogram.
