Rough Idle Speed

On my 2016 Edge Titanium with 2.0 Ecoboost and 6200km I’m experiencing very rough idle speed every time I stop at a red light or anywhere else. If I shift to neutral then its ok. No problem accelerating or driving and plan to take it for service.

 

I wonder if it’s a common problem on the 2016.

I had a 2013 Edge Limited with the 2.0L Ecoboost engine and after 32K km I never had a problem using regular gas. Same with my new 2016 Edge for 6200 km never had a problem until now. The owner’s manual says to use regular gas and that’s what I do. It’s not the fuel

 

I got my appointment with the dealer for next Monday and they said since it’s very unusual to have engine problem on a new car they will keep the car all day for various tests. I will report back the results

Often these problems on new cars can be traced to small vacuum leaks. (Should throw a code I would imagine).

As for bad gas, you could try a couple of other things, first try running a tank or two of 93 octane and second, pour in a can of Techron to clean and residue in the injectors.

And agree with the use of top tier gas. (As a sidenote, I prefer "real" gas, without Ethanol.)

Wasn't saying that you needed to increase the octane, just that maybe if you use 1 particular station, to maybe switch it up to one that is a top tier. The particular gas station that you use could have gotten a bad batch or their tanks could have been contaminated. Just saying that you may want to switch it up.

 

Increasing the octane 'may' help as it does adjust the timing & definitely worth a shot. If it does, I'd be interested to know if the gas station(s) you're using aren't using a quality fuel source & are getting sub par fuel which might be causing your rough idle

Very good point, when the problem first occurred it was the first thing I thought - to switch gas station but it did not help

Yesterday when I went out I noticed to my surprise that the rough idle was gone and the engine was running like new again. For the past 2 weeks I have done nothing special neither I fill up and I have no idea why the rough idle appeared in the first place neither why disappeared by itself.

 

Since my appointment with the dealer was this morning, I went and explained the above and they said to go back if and when the problem comes back.

 

So that’s the news

I'm also wondering if your intake valves are coated will un-burned oil. I'm looking getting a oil catch can. I'm really curious about what the can will catch. I'm approaching 12,000 miles & I've seen a video of a 9,000 mile 2.0 Ecoboost Focus ST where his intake valves are coated with unburned oil. This causes rough idle, hesitation & sluggish take offs. I'm very curious how long these intake valves will last before they need to be cleaned or replaced.

I got my car last April and no one has touched the car since then because it was running as it should. Forgot to mention that I had no problem with starting the car even in -20C weather neither any acceleration / hesitation problems – just when I was at a red light she will start the rough idle and I had to keep pressing the gas a little because I was thinking she will stop.

 

I don’t know if this has anything to do with the rough idle but about 10 days before the problem started I went to a dealer to purchase a set of new winter tires (tires, mags and the 4 TPMS valves). However they installed regular valves instead of the TPMS by mistake and now the TPMS is not working and have the light on my dash lit all the time.

I went through the TPMS malfunction earlier. The problem should go away once sensors get put in their proper locations. If not immediately, will go off after a few miles. What irked me was there was the tires & wheels came off another edge, but the TPMS sensors were from an earlier vehicle & not compatible with my '16.

 

My catch can is on order, so I'm VERY interested in what it'll grab. Better safe than sorry, i guess. I know that on the 15 & up, the turbo's were slightly redesigned with their twin scroll tech. Only time will tell

Any updates? My 2015 EB Edge has been doing this for some time. Took it in sevttimes and no codes. But its noticeable even using the same chevron for over a month. Tried shell, chevron, 76, Texaco all no change. Even showed ford a video of the tach bouncing around at idle. They said its maybe because I filled the tank to much? But even at half 1/4 almost empty same issue.

 

Maybe needs new spark plugs? Or vacuum leak?

 

I will say there is no loss in power and still gets reasonable mileage.

How many miles on your Edge? Could be spark plugs, could be dirty MAP sensors, etc. A full systems check of the basics is a good place to start if no codes are showing up. Might even be the throttle body in a 2015, I THINK. Some MYs the throttle body basically sends the car into limp mode and needs to be replaced. But I would honestly look at plugs and MAP sensors first. Hopefully no fuel leak, but the plugs will tell you if there is. How long are you going between oil changes (months/miles)?
