Need advice on road noise and vibration

I replaced the tires with Michelin's and it did not help with the noise. I'm assuming it must just be the way the Edge is built. Just poor quality. I am taking the car in again, next Friday. We will see if they will find anything. I am so ready to get rid of this vehicle. I guess I am stuck with it for the next three years. Next time I buy a car I will take it home for a few days and drive it awhile. I just had a 2014 Edge before, and it drove so smooth! Wish I would have kept it!

I have an 09 MKX and it's as quiet as anyone could want. I usually get a 2016 Edge or MKX as a loaner from my local Ford dealer and they are even more quiet. So the problem is not the design of the Edge.

It could be several other things, tires are always first and that's the path I would have taken as well.

Next is bearings. It's always possible that a wheel bearing didn't get greased properly at the manufacturer and is now making itself known. (I had a left front bearing replaced on my wife's Sebring Convertible and had to have the exact same bearing replaced 1-1/2 years later. I don't deal with this dealer any longer, cheap parts, no warranty on their repairs).

Had an Escort years ago during the age of high gas prices. Got rwsdy to give to my son when buying a new car and they found it needed a new engine mount. They used a NAPA mount and I didn't make it 5 miles before I was back at service demanding they put in Motorcraft. It sounded like I was driving in an old pickup truck, off the farm. Horrible noise. New Motorcraft mount and all quiet again. Wouldn't think a simple motor mount could make a car undrivable (from noise) but the NAPA mount was made from very hard rubber and amplified the sounds of the engine and road noise.

Highly unusual but any part can fail, even in the first year. I would ask to have the technician take a ride and ask his opinion.

Suggest they raise it off the ground, run the car in gear and listen with a stethoscope. But overall, insist it be found and repaired.

Took my vehicle in Yesterday and had asked to have my oil changed and have a technician drive with me. After waiting an hour and a half they told me my oil was changed but the technician had to leave due to an emergency. Frustrated, I asked to have them to at least rotate the tires and rebalance them. Apparently the tires were still out of balance. I'm going to drive the car today and see if any better. I guess if not I'm going to try a different dealership.

I hit a curb pulling into a drug store yesterday (maybe 5 mph) and blew out the sidewall. (Tires are a month old, Bridgestone's). Hole about the size of a silver dollar. Called Lincoln and the immediately dispatched a tow truck to put on the spare. Anyway, currently driving on the spare and it's really noisey. Rumbling, can't stand it. One tire and it destroyed my piece and quite. Just saying ...

I did have them balanced, also had them check the alignment. One tire was out of balance, but did not solve the problem. I then checked the reviews on the pirelli scorpion verde all season, and they described my exact problem. Decided on Michelin premier gtx. They should be in in a couple of days. I have heard really good things about these tires. I had Michelin tires on my last Edge, and it drove really nice!

Did you ever get them changed?

The noise and vibration you described can be coming from fairly new tires if they were soft rubber when new. They tend to be super quiet when new because of the soft rubber, but can cup causing a weak vibration and road rumble.

Here's a fairly new, good video from FordTechMakuloco on how to quick check your tires to see if they are cupped, causing noise and vibration.

I did get the Michelin premier, and it did not solve the problem. Also had them balanced three times, alignment checked and rotated the tires. Did not help. Actually getting worse. I can really feel the vibration in the steering wheel now. I'm going to call another dealership in the area and have then put check it out.

Could br a wheel that'd bent or distorted.

Most wheel imbalance problems will make themselves evident at speeds above 45 mph. A back-and-forth shimmy in the steering wheel means one or both front wheels are dynamically imbalanced, or a rim is bent.

Your deaaler needs check radial and lateral runout of your tires anf wheels if their balancer has these capabilities.

Could also be an unbalanced rotor. Could try reindexing the rotors by one or two lug positions. If still present, pull off the rotors and check for lateral runout.

Sealed bearings must have about <0.002" runout or they can cause vibration.

If the rims are not bent (tires good) the imbalance may be in the driveshaft; if your car is an AWD. Probably not on a FWD car as the driveshafts are turning at the same speed as the tires, around 800 rpm. Not fast enough to get this kind of vibration.

Another possibility is a resonant vibration in the exhaust system. At certain speeds, the natural oscillations that occur in the exhaust may re-enforce each other which can cause the exhaust system to buzz or resonate. Creates noise and vibration to occur in the cabin. This usually only happens if the stock exhaust has been modified or damaged.

A vibration that comes and goes with changing engine speed can be due to a broken motor mount.

Wow, it could be so many different things. I have an appt next Friday with a different dealership. I just hope they are willing to take the time to find out what's wrong. Especially since it is a warranty issue. It's just really frustrating since the car is only 4 months old. The other dealership would not even try. You would think that after spending almost 40,000 they would stand behind their product. I have always loved Ford products, but this has been a really bad experience! Next time I will take the vehicle home and drive it for a few days before buying it!

Well took my Edge to a new dealership today, and they think it may be a faulty lane keeping module. I'll have to take it back next week and see if it is a fuse or the module itself. They said it is really difficult to get to those particular fuses, so it is going to take a couple of days to get it fixed. They will provide a loaner while the work is being done. At least this dealership took the time to find out what was possibly going on. The other dealership did nothing. I wasted money on new tires and wasted my time on three trips to the dealership, just so they could tell me they couldn't find anything wrong. I guess we will see if this fixes the problem. It certainly makes sense! I will update after next week to see if this solves the problem!

My Edge is still in the shop, apparently it was not the lane keeping module. The service manager said that he had opened a case with Ford, and my car is one of three other cars that have this problem. The first step is to replace the tires under warranty. Unfortunately I already replaced my tires at my expense, since the first dealership could find "nothing" wrong. So my car which is only 5 months old, and on the 4th trip to the dealership sits in the service department. They are going to continue to look for the problem. It is so frustrating to have a new 40,000.00 car that you can't drive, but continue to make payments on. So frustrated, and starting to get really mad.

Well after sitting in the dealership for 7 days, I went to pick up my vehicle. The manager of the dealership greets me and informs me my vehicle is driving normal, no problems were found and no work was done on the car. I asked why the technician who drove the car, said he could feel the vibration. They also told me they opened a case with ford on the problem. Why would they keep my car for 7 days and do no work on my vehicle? I asked the manager this question, and all he would say was the vehicle drives normal and no work was done. He also handed me a receipt that said "no work done on the vehicle". I called ford customer service, and all they would say was that they have to go by what the technician said. I have since noticed a small water leak in the right back door, and paint chipping on one back panel near the hatchback. I really don't have time to take back in to the dealer!!! Extremely disappointed. I feel I have no options and stuck with this vehicle!!!!

Interesting; just noticed that I edited my original post on this thread. Don't remember ever doing that. Wonder if that has anything to do with my complaint to ford's customer service?

You must have done it accidentally. There is no way for an admin to assume someone else's login. Besides, if someone wanted to hide something they would have simply deleted the entire thread. No conspiracy here.

I've been messaging with eddyecpowell. His issue was never resolved, and he ended up trading-in the vehicle. I very much appreciate him taking the time to provide details.

I'm in the same situation: 6,000 miles now on my Edge Sport, wheels/tires have been Road Force balanced 3 times. The vibration comes and goes at maintained speeds (seems the worst at ~55 and again in the low 80s), regardless of road surface, etc. In otherwords: I can take the same single-lane-each-way road, and half the week the car will drive smooth, the others a wheel feels like it might be loose (or a tire has a bad flat spot).

The dealership that has been servicing it has been great, but it's been throwing them for a curveball too (sometimes they can feel the vibration, other times they can't). We finally swapped to another set of tires and wheels, and the vibration situation was the same. The latest is that play was found in one axle, it is on order.

I'm simply posting this here as others seem to have had similar issues between the Edge and Fusion.
