blockisle9
Just curious if anyone knows if the 2017 has the Ford Connect? I read the 2017 Escape does but can't seem to find anything on the Edge. I order a 2017 Titaniam and was wondering if it's included in it. NYT
Nope. Don't ask why, there's no logic.
Waldo
Of course there's logic. To have Ford Connect you need a modem. To put in a modem you need wiring and software. When you're an OEM you can't just slap that stuff in, you need to design it, test it, coordinate it with production and so on. To do all that work for just a modem is very inefficient, so Ford waits until they are already designing, testing and changing something else at the same time. The 2017 Escape had all new wiring, the 2017 Edge had nothing different than the 2016.
akirby
Does that apply to the 2016 MKX as well since it came out after the 2015 Edge?
NYT
Fair enough, there's some logic operationally from Ford's side. Bummer that lower models have some better options reguardless. Even heater wipers got pulled from the Edge, yet the Escape has them. Apparently Connect can be added to the current Edge, so it is possible. Not all that important, but Ford Pass is sure useless without it.

akirby
It can be puzzling. Sometimes it's technical limitations, sometimes it's probably just marketing.

Not sure about the needing wires for a modem part, unless I'm reading this article wrong: https://www.cnet.com...ected-features/
akirby
Not sure about the needing wires for a modem part, unless I'm reading this article wrong: https://www.cnet.com...ected-features/ You're reading it wrong. That's an add-on that plugs into the obd-II port. The factory installed version is completely different.
mjonis
You're reading it wrong. That's an add-on that plugs into the obd-II port. The factory installed version is completely different. But my reply was specifically in regards to waldo's post that: "Of course there's logic. To have Ford Connect you need a modem. To put in a modem you need wiring and software" That's why I replied: "Not sure about the needing wires for a modem part" Plugging in an ODB module to get a modem doesn't need new wiring. How am I reading that wrong that the plug in module adds a modem? "Ford SmartLink plugs into a car's OBDII port, hidden under the dashboard, and contains a GPS chip and 4G/LTE modem." I never said it was the same, you're putting words in my mouth.
akirby
You need wiring to connect the modem regardless. When you plug into the OBD-II port you're using the OBD-II port wiring which is already present in every vehicle. But the factory sync connect solution doesn't plug into the OBD-II port - it requires dedicated wiring which isn't present in all vehicles. The upcoming OBD plug-in device will allow the use of the Ford Pass app to start, unlock, locate your vehicle and all of the features currently available in vehicles that have Sync Connect from the factory. Instead of the modem being hard wired into the vehicle it's in the plug-in device itself.

Instead of the modem being hard wired into the vehicle it's in the plug-in device itself. I know all of that. Waldo's point was you can't just add sync connect to a 2015 Edge because they didn't put in the wiring for the modem. The add-on device for older vehicles which includes the modem and plugs into the OBD-II port doesn't change that fact because it comes with the modem and uses the OBD-II port wiring to connect it to the vehicle. pnewby
Hey Ford techs- any update on release date or cost on this new toy? Will it be movable from vehicle to vehicle> For instance a "16 Edge Sport to a "13 Ford Explorer limited?
akirby
Haven't heard any updates but since it simply plugs into the obd-ii port it should be completely portable.
