rtmad21
Hello all, I have a 2010 AWD with 85,000 miles. For about a week or so i would get a random but strong vibration maybe once a day but could not figure out where it was coming from. Yesterday while driving in a parking lot (<10 MPH) I heard a loud grinding sound followed by what sounded like a dragging tailpipe. Now, when driving forward i hear the same sounds plus a loud rattle almost like a rock in a can being shaken. Today when I tried to move the car it was gone until I made a turn, then it came back. Also, this only happens when moving forward, no issue in reverse. Any thoughts?
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Sounds like a driveshaft and/or RDU and/or PTU issue. Where was the grinding sound coming from? That would be PTU/RDU. Vibration might be the driveshaft, but hard to tell with the sounds in the mix.
Heath28
Did you find out what the issue was? I'm having the same problem.
lildisco
Could also be a wheel bearing. Only noticeable when you but a load by turning a certain way.
turbosig
2009 Ford Edge limited AWD - 80k on the clock. I'm having the exact same issue. Any solutions to this problem? I noticed it too in a parking lot going less 5mph. On,y happened when I made a left turn at low speeds. Almost sounds like a fan blade was hitting something. Very clunky sound and I'm getting the vibration as well on take offs. I thought maybe a wheel bearing issue, but the clunky and noise from the turn got me thinking otherwise. WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Classic PTU issues (front differential/transfer case). Hopefully it hasn't chewed up anything else in the process.
turbosig
Thanks for that. Yeah, I'm reading more and more about this. It's definitely the PTU. I also noticed a smell, but my smell was similar to natural gas. Is this the smel everyone is talking about! Also, is it possible for me to inspect it for leaks with the car on jacks? WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Yes thats what it smells like. And yes, you can inspect it while the edge is on jackstands, you will want good lighting though. It is on the passenger side, and the leak will likely be from the vent atop the ptu. The grease will be dark brown in color, thick, and smelly. turbosig
Great thanks for taking the time. I appreciate it. I'll keep you posted. I usually do all the service myself, but this looks like I may need a lift to do this job properly and not on my back.
