scorpionking0102
Does anyone out there have a 2013 or 2014 Edge with rust starting to show up on the stainless steel exhaust tips. My wife's 2013 SEL started to show rust while it was still under warranty. I couldn't get Ford to replace them so I did some research on why stainless steel will rust. From what I read, and I'm not a metallurgist, their are many causes. From cheap stainless to welding slag or contamination from welding the tips on. Stainless steel comes in several grades also. One thing I did find was to "NEVER" use steel wool pads on stainless steel because it could possibly contaminate or embed steel onto the surface, Steel will rust so you may be compounding your problem. What I found that works best is a good quality stainless steel polish. If this doesn't get it all off then use polishing compound. Then buff with a soft cloth as you would when you apply wax to your paint. It works for me and my exhaust tips look like new now.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Collinite Metal Wax is a great product for exactly this. If you do use steel wool, be sure to use #0000 only. Home improvement stores carry the wool, cheap.
Ntrain2k
I just use quality steel wool on them myself.
Depiry
stainless means what it says unless you have 314 which is bullet proof, Had a boat and the rails would rust and that was explained to me. barkeepers friend is a good cleaner polish ,use it with a scrubber sponge, steel wool leaves metal that will rust on the stainless tips, Marty
