New Ford Edge owner - not the car

As a new owner of a 2009 Ford Edge Limited AWD for approximately four days, I've been pretty impressed so far...mind you my previous car was a 1996 Mercury Sable which I must say, the biggest piece of crap I've ever owned!

Has anyone got any tips on what to look out for as far as bad things happening? From what I've read the SYNC causes everyone headaches and has any one swapped out theirs for an aftermarket option?

many thanks

Welcome, Steve, and congrats on the new ride (how many miles, what color). Problems with SYNC are overblown, IMHO, but yes there can be quite a learning curve.

Most common issues with the Gen 1 Edge:

PTU failure - probably due to insufficient capacity and the Ford-recommended lifetime fluid (NOT!)

Wheel bearing failure (a real pain when it's a rear wheel bearing)

Cooling fan failure - replace with new fan AND new fan control module (OEM/Motorcraft is best)

PCM failure - due to spark plugs not being replaced on time, which fries the coils, which in turn fry the PCM (new plugs & PCV valve ASAP recommended)

Evaporator drain blockage (can cause sloshing sound in the dash on sharp turns) that can overflow into & fry the blower motor

(I am sure others will chime in with more)

Really, reading the TSBs, recalls, etc is a great way to get acquainted with your vehicle.

The chrome cladding on the wheels tends to hold a lot of dirt & grime that over time can throw the balance off. If you find noise & vibration from the wheels that no alignment can solve, the cladding may need to be removed.

I have a 2009 MKX. I verified that the transmission fluid was changed at 60k (important), and had the PTU fluid changed at 70k.

Had the car detailed inside and out. Have Weathertech mats front, rear and cargo. Recommended. Installed an Escort Passport Max2 radar detector just below the mirtor, wired it into the back of the mirror. Somewhat a lead foot and it's save my can several times. (Last weekend actually, cop hiding on backside if hill on bypass, I picked him up 1/4 mile out and slowed, pulled into right hand lane, guy behind me felt the speed limit wasn't fast enough, continued driving 80 and got nailed as we crested to hill.

The dealer found the PTU seal leaking at 94k and had it changed (no fluid on garage floor, looked like it had just started to leak. Ford mechanic at dealer told me that loss of fluid over time causes the remaining fluid to get gummy and stop lubricating. Causes the PTU to fail). Definitely something to keep an eye on as you have AWD.

Got a engine light around 74k, turned out to be a broken vacuum hose. Dealer said it was not common, only 2nd one they had replaced.

Had plugs replaced at 90k service iterval. Dealer told me if they are not serviced, the gap grows larger and causes them to draw more current, causing extra heat and coil failure.

I've had no problems whatsoever with the APM (radio, navigation), sync or the APIM (bluetooth, usb). CD, DVD and Jutebox works great too. Had a problem with text messaging until Samsung had an update. Worked perfectly after that. I subscribe to Sirius radio, has some nice points (news such as CNN & Fox, sports, comedy channels, specific music chanels like 50's & 60's, Willie's Roadhouse, dozens of others, etc.).

I'll be replacing the battery on Tuesday (battery checker showed that it was starting to fail, finally started to fail yesterday. Then new brakes and tires (next year).

Have plans to add a backup camera and tie it into the navigation screen. Have the camera and harness, just lazy in getting started.

My 2007 has 108,000 miles and has been great. FWD so no PTO problems. Replaced the factory 6 disc changer radio to a Jensen 7020. Nice quality and reasonable price. Slightly long boot up time. I still have the steering wheel control module and back up camera in the garage a year later. One day soon when I have nothing better to do LOL.

I replaced the front axles because of a bad CV joint at around 85,000 miles. I just replaced the plugs at 108,000 miles, PITA but improved gas mileage and needed to prevent coil and computer damage. When I got the car the AC was asthmatic. The filter was completely clogged. Never been cleaned. Mine has a screen filter that can be washed. When you held it up to the light you couldn't see through it.

This car has been rock steady. The CV joint was the only repair done since I own it and I knew it was bad when I bought it at about 70,000 miles.
