2105 Ford Edge 3.5L: Bad smell on start up

Hi there,

I recently purchased Ford Edge 2015 with 35K miles on it. When I start the car I can smell a strong unpleasant odor coming out of the air vents. With A/C on the smell goes away after 10 minutes or so. However, if I turn A/C off after that the smell comes back but not as strong.

I thought that maybe it's the cabin air filter, but wasn't able to to get to the filter since glove box door doesn't seem to be removable. How do I replace cabin air filter in 2015 Ford Edge?

What could cause the smell?

Thanks!

It could very well be a dirty air filter, but there's also a good possibly that the ac drain is clogged and there is a mold/mildew buildup in the cord housing.

Both are easily fixable, here is a link to changing a filter on a 2015 escape (believe this will work in an edge):

Here's a link for a 2015 Explorer

(should be changed approximately every six months),

To cLear the blockage here's a link to a YouTube video:

and where to buy Lubegard to sanitize the core housing:

ONE way to tell if you have a blocked or restricted drain, run the ac and see if there's any drainage coming from under the car.

Another way to knock out mildew from your vents is to do the following.

-turn recirculating off, ac on low, fan speed on the highest setting and make it blow out of the floor boards and dash vents.

- then spray Lysol into the intake ducts at the base on the windshield and allow the ac to run for 10 minutes.

That should knock out any nasty stuff you have growing in your HVAC system. You would still need to clean the drain if that is clogged too though.
