Hard shifting

I just purchased a 2014 Edge with the economist engine and it is shifting hard especially when down shifting at highway speeds. I have not been able to find anything on this topic, but it is disappointing, and make me worry about the transmission long term. Has anyone else seen this issue?

I have a 2012 with the Ecoboost engine and it did this for a while. I posted a topic on the FWD section of the forum. It had quite a bit done at the dealer thankfully all covered under warranty. From what I can say is that it has gotten quite a bit better since the 20 day stay in July, but it still occasionally has a hard upshift or downshift. Since mine is under the premium care warranty for another three years or until 100,000 miles if I have to take it in for anything else soon I will mention it again. I honestly think it is a calibration issue or a programming update, but I am no mechanic by any means. Mine has about 68,000 miles on it right now.

Also remember that this transmission was co-devloped with GM so anytime it gives me a hiccup I just assume thats the GM coming out in it.

Is the downshift at part throttle or full throttle or both? Engine problems can sometimes feel like transmission problems. Your Edge is nearing the point where spark plugs are endoflife, particularly if the Edge was driven mixed hwy/city. Another thing to check is the intercooler, which can accumulate a mix of fuel/water/oil, which can in turn be sucked into the engine when conditions are right. It should be able to be emptied without removing the intercooler. Also get fresh oil & filter onto the engine, and make sure to use Top Tier fuel, if you haven't filled it up yet.

I'd consider a transmission fluid 3x drain/fill, particularly if the transmission fluid is in any way discolored (healthy is reddish pink) or smells burnt. But otherwise, I too think calibration might be what is needed, so ask the dealer if there are any updates.

Do you still have factory warranty left, and if so for how long? I'd consider extending it with Ford PremiumCare ESP/Ford Protect before the warranty runs out. Online pricing from Ford dealers like LombardFordWarrantys.com and FloodFordESP.com are usually the best. Ziegler Ford may also have competitive pricing.

Thank you for the replies.

It is mostly a downshift issue when more power is needed, and is even evident wit cruise control on. I may consider the Ford Premium Care, though I have not normally purchased extended warranties. I will check the fluid, and ask about updates. Is there anything in the basic Sync system that would indicate if the proper updates are in place? I have had such a good experience with my 2008 Taurus that this issue caught me by surprise.

Any further updates on the transmission. Have you had it looked at. I have been driving mine like an old granny lately trying to get at least 24 mpg on my 11 mile on way mostly city commute lately and it seems to like to be driven that way. Just wanted to see what yours was up to as of late.

When mine was in the shop the thing they were trying to calibrate at the end was the 6-4 downshift so I assume when downshifting under heavy load it will skip 5th entirely. I do not know. I am sitting at 70,600 miles and it still seems pretty good when granny driving and keeping it under 2,200 rpms at all times even accelerating, but it is difficult. I have also switched to using only top tier fuels since October and maybe its a placebo effect but it feels like it is running smoother overall. I will be replacing spark plugs this next Summer which I will assume will be around 80,000 miles.

The 2.0 EB engines are hard on oil, so keep on top of that. Also, don't believe the 150K or whatever they state for initial trans fluid change. Trans fluids have detergents (just like engine oils) to keep the transmission parts clean, and they do get used up, more often in extreme climates or severe duty conditions. It's a pain to do the 6F35 fluid, but well worth it to change it out every 60K miles. If the transmission does not have a replaceable filter, do not FLUSH. A fluid exchange (or drain & fill) is ok.

I have been looking at doing the drain and fill 3x but most of the dealers I have been in contact with suggest not doing this. They say it can cause any problems to actually get worse. What are your thoughts?

I never did anything, and so far have just been dealing with the hard downshift. My dealer near me wants over $100 jut to see if is operating improperly, and the transmission shop that will diagnose for $0 is across town.
