What a day

Well, as some of you may know, I'm going to "have" to get a new car this Nov. My finalists are the Edge Titanium AWD with 302A package and driver's package, Hyundai Santa Fe Sport AWD 2.0 Turbo Ultimate, and Kia Sorento SXL.

Why am I "having" to get a new car? Well, today was the last straw.

See, I have a 2005 Chevy Equinox (purchased new). 5 years after I bought it, with only 40k miles on it, head gasket blew (check engine light went on, Onstar said cylinder misfire, blah blah). OK, car was out of warranty (3 years 36k miles, obviously over on both counts). $2200 later... So the dealership (service dept.) says they have a lot of these issues with the '05 and they tell people to get coolant flushed at 36k instead of what the manual says at 50k. Do a little googling and find out there's the dex coolant issue, but class action had to be settled by 2008. Obviously my car had problem AFTER that (but would've been nice to have gotten a notice about the issue).

Well, last month, carrier bearing and axle went. Fortunately after the head gasket debacle, I bought an extended warranty through Carchex. Made sure it covered gaskets and wear and tear. So they covered that repair. Google again, and it's a known problem as well. Vehicle only has 72k miles on it (73.5 now I think).

So I didn't want to have to get a new vehicle this year, wanted to wait until next year to save up another 7k and maybe get a 1-year old one and save some money. But the other day, I heard "water" sounds behind the dash and said, uh-oh, hope it's not the head gasket. Take it in. Yep, head gasket again.

Hopefully warranty company will cover it. Oh, needs a new driveshaft as well.

Warranty ends 11/30/16. I'm sure I'll have some out of pocket, but I couldn't, in good conscience, try to tell the car knowing there were problems that needed to be fixed.

Now, whether I can *sell* it, is a diff. question. NADA, KBB, Edmunds say trade-in is somewhere around 3.5k-4k given the low mileage. Private party is probably 4-5k.

I'm hoping Ford (and Kia/Hyundai) doesn't use aluminum engines made in China like GM did.

Needless to say, will never own a GM again (had countless other issues like spare tire area filling up with water, etc.--hence my reluctance with the 2015 Edge's and the water problems).

Sigh.

3 more months.

Now I'm debating if I shouldn't just lease with option to buy in case I get a lemon. Running the numbers, looks like about $1300 more to lease and buy vs. buy outright. For all 3 vehicles.

Yeah, after googling around, the 2005-2009 Equinoxes are all pretty much garbage. Well hopefully the next car will be more reliable. At least this time around, I'm not getting the first model year or re-design either. Learned my lesson the hard way. AND get extended warranty too.

Looking forward to whatever I get. This site has been extremely helpful in all things Edge. There's a decent Kia forums as well. The Hyundai forums, not so much for the Sport. Mostly Santa Fe, and they are different vehicles.

Sounds like my Chevy Lumina. Baaad car. This was the kind of car that windows would go down and not up. Once I turned the blinker on and the stalk came off in my hand. If I typed all my grief with it I could get carpal tunnel syndrome. It was just off warrantee when a head gasket went and dumped antifreeze into the oil. Less than 40,000 miles and it needed a motor. Lots of stop leak, new oil and a ride to the dealership for a trade in. When I traded it in for my wife's Grand Cherokee the appraiser said it was really a nice car and his daughter was looking for a good used car. I told him to wholesale it. He raised the agreed upon value $100 and said thanks.

My father in law was a Chevy dealer. I had lots of nice Chevy's that were reliable and some really bad ones. The shame of it is that it's like a bad dinner at a restaurant. No matter how good they are, one bad one and you will never go back.

So far, the Jeep is unbreakable and my Edge is really trouble free.

I had a 2012 Chevrolet Corvette ZO6 that spent more time in the shop then it did with me.

Computer glitches, steering problems, sunroof recall X 2, AC/Heat problem, paint problem.......

One Saturday at a Corvette Show and a rare occasion that I had it .... a guy saw it and wanted to buy it......SOLD !

So now I have a Ford Edge Sport....that I love!

I also bought Fords top of the line extended warranty which ..... when it was sold I was told "covers everything but wipers, tires and light bulbs"

When I had the dreaded "SHIFT TO PARK" problem ......NOT COVERED !

IM a tad pissed at GM and Ford and am going shopping at Lexus ....they actually cover their product on the very rare occasion it has a issue !
