No driver climate option on right 4.2¨ display

Recommended Posts

Hi y'all.

I just got myself Ford Edge SEL 2016 with old SYNC touch.

I traded in my Fusion.

On Fusion, I was able to change driver's climate via right 4.2" display and steering wheel controls.

On my Edge, there is no such option!

I only have these options: Entertainment, Navigation, Phone.

There is no Climate option on the right 4.2" display.

Do all Ford Edge 2015 with the old SYNC touch have the same problem or is it just mine that lacks climate control via steering wheel?

last year with climate control on the wheel was 14 for the edge

Why in the world did Ford remove such a useful feature?

The thing one fiddles most with is climate.

Right now I have to put my eyes off the road, search for the button on the center console, put my eyes up, on the 8" screen, search for the small information trying to find out what F did I select, put my eyes AGAIN on the center console, search for the button to change ventilator speed, put my eyes AGAIN on the 8" screen and search again for the information regarding the ventilator speed and all that time my eyes are OFF THE ROAD!

Why Ford?!

How can we rollback the software downgrade Ford did to our cars?

Don't you have temp +/- buttons on the center console?

I know what you mean - that's how I adjust temp on my 2013 Fusion. But with the hard buttons on the center stack it's not a big deal.

You have +/- button that are small and in the same line with the ventilator speed buttons.

All four buttons horizontal, so no way of hitting the right button without looking.

Ford used to have temperature +/- buttons vertically oriented and ventilator speed +/- buttons horizontally oriented, so yes, it was a bit easier to hit buttons without looking.

But, it's an automatic climate control so you have to LOOK for the temperature reading and ventilator speed ON THE CENTER SCREEN.

I tell you, changing temperature in the car is now downright dangerous.

  • Look down
  • Search for the temperature button
  • Look up
  • Search for the temperature information
  • Click buttons
  • Look down
  • Search for the ventilator speed button
  • Look up
  • Search for the ventilator speed information
  • Click buttons

Up to THREE SECONDS can pass while not looking on the road!

Why would Ford downgrade our cars and make them more dangerous?

My 2014 Fusion has the climate feature in the cluster and I have never used it - ever. I find it way too distracting as I have to scroll through the menus with some combination of up down and left right just to make one simple adjustment that I can do by hitting the single button on the center stack. Besides, I rarely ever adjust the climate, just set it to 72 and forget it.

If you're really worried about it, just learn to use the voice commands.

Oh please - it's no more dangerous than anything else you do in the vehicle.

You glance at the center stack to find the temp button, then you glance at the temp as you change it. Not dangerous and certainly not any worse than old manual systems.

Did you read what I just wrote, all the steps I have to do while doing it?

It takes up to three seconds.

The automatic control always spins fans faster than necessary and they make noise.

I never use automatic setting :)

True, bitching here won't bring back the function.

It is mind boggling that they REMOVE features with each new iteration.

Did Ford fire the wrong guys? :)

If I want to reduce the fan speed I just increase the temp (in summer) and vice versa in winter. I never have to adjust the fan speed manually.

And if you are adjusting the fan speed manually then you don't need to change the temp - just set the temp on 65 and manage the fan speed manually.

They didn't remove it for no reason. Having 3 ways to do the same function is confusing.

That just makes no sense.

One controls the thermostat the other controls the speed of fans.

It was not confusing, at all.

I always had Climate control on my right 4.2" screen.

I had almost no other use for the right screen, everything else (changing stations, seeing road indications) was done via buttons on the steering wheel.

I almost never used the center console, ever.

It makes perfect sense. Perhaps you don't understand how auto climate control works.

When in auto mode you set the temperature that you want and it controls the temp and fan speed. As you get closer to your set temp it slows down the fans. If you're at the set temperature the fans are either off or on very low.

Try it - put it on auto and adjust the temp up and down and see what happens.

As an example - if I get in my car and it's hot outside and I have it set to 72 the fans come on at max speed. If I need to make a phone call I just raise the temp to 80 and the fan speed slows down and it's less noisy. When I'm done I put it back to 72 or 74.

If you do that, it will keep heating the car for longer time which is not what you want, you want the same thermostat setting just slower fans. :)

That's not how it works. When you're in Auto mode the temperature is not the temperature of the air coming out it's the temperature you want it to maintain and the car decides whether you need hot or cold air and how hard to blow the fans. When you have it set to 73 the temp of the air coming out is much colder - probably around 45 degrees, not 73.

If I have it set to 73 and I get in the car on a 94 degree day, it will immediately blow cold air at high fan speed. If I push the temp up to 82 it still blows cold air but the fan speed slows down.

If you want absolute control over the fan speed then just set the temp and leave it alone and just adjust the fan speed. You don't need to keep changing both.

Hi Damir Čolak,

The option to control climate on the steering wheel has been removed. However, you may find some helpful tips on using that feature with SYNC here: http://owner.ford.com/how-tos/sync-technology/sync-3/settings/how-to-adjust-climate-comfort.html

This is how I must change climate now:

  • Search for the temperature button
  • Look up

Why?

P.S.

What are the voice commands to say "one more/one less centigrade" and "faster" or "slower" fan speed?

It does not make it easier, at all. I want to control thermostat and fan speed, without killing everyone in the car by taking my eyes off the road.

Did Ford ever explain why they removed the functionality from their cars?

Don't they have UX experts? Did they have a bug? Don't they have developers to fix it?

I'm an IT engineer so, it is mind boggling for me to see Ford remove functionality and make things dangerous for users.
