push button start lacking security

this is my first car with a push button start and im having a serious problem with a few things:

the car can be started if the doors are opened and the car is separated from the keyfob, its like that odd moment when you get out to put gas or something, if someone were to enter the car they can take the car and i would be standing there holding a keyfob with no car.

also the pathetic accessory mode. is there any mods or functions that we can make these cars more secure and get a true accessory mode?

(ps there was already an incident in philadelphia where a 2015 edge was involved in a accident, the owner got out and his car was stolen)

I have an older model without the push-button starting, but I thought the passive key had to be inside the car before it would start?

As for standing outside the car while it's still running, page 47, "Note: Make sure to lock your vehicle before leaving it unattended."

Really wouldn't be any different if someone got out of a car using a key, left it running and someone else slipped in and drove off.

Back here where winters are cold, it's not unusual for people to fill up with gas, leave their car running whIle they go in to pay and come back out to find their car gone. Some car thief's hang out near stations just for an easy score.

The fast restart feature (page 151 of the Owner's manual) will allow the car to be restarted within 10 seconds of shutting it off, even if the key is not in the vehicle. So yes, if a thief is able to get you out of the car and jump in within 10 seconds, they could restart the car and drive away. If you're really worried about that, just wait 10 seconds before opening the door.

As for accessory mode, what exactly is the problem? If the issue is you want the radio on without all the other stuff, then as akirby says, just push the power button on the radio. Otherwise the mode is exactly like every other car.

As an aside, in Ford's early systems (like my 2010 MKT), you could push the start button once to get accessory mode, then once more to get "ON" mode, then once more to get back to Off. But that was very confusing because if you accidentally hit the button and then thought you could just hit the button again to turn it off, it didn't work that way. So then Ford made one push for accessory mode, then a push and hold to get to ON mode. But nobody really understood that so Ford ditched the whole two-mode thing and just made one push go directly to ON.

What if the car started, and then you leave with the key?

Does the car in certain amount of time turn off itself if sees no fob around?

That's why it beeps the horn twice to let you know you just left with the only key. And it shows a message in the message center.

It won't turn off and it still allows you to do a fast restart as Waldo confirmed. So if you somehow didn't hear the honks or see the message and you got to your destination it gives you a chance to restart the car without the fob so you're not stranded.

Yes there is an auto-shut-off if the vehicle is idling in park. Fusion is 30 minutes. You can turn it off but it resets when the vehicle restarts.

That works with or without a fob in the vehicle. I thought the question was if the person with the key walked away and left someone else driving. In that case they can drive all day until they shut it off for more than 10 or 20 seconds.

It's very very difficult if not impossible to siphon gas or add foreign objects to the tank. Therefore there isn't much need for extra security or the extra cost to add such a system. If it bothers you locking plugs are available which is a much cheaper solution.

It's simple. If you get out, shut it off & lock your car.

If your just getting gas, shut it off. No one can drive off if they can't start it. No different than a car with a key.

The accessory mode is different, but like others habe said, it's not needed. Just get in the habit of pressing on the brake when you press the start button.

bringing this back from the dead...

anyone who wants to secure their push button start that has access to FORScan can do so by making the following change:

Secure Idle (cannot shift gears while car running with no keyfob) (BCM):

726-42-01 x0xx xxxx xxxx (disabled)

726-42-01 x1xx xxxx xxxx (enabled)

After making this change, you can start the car, keep the key fob in your pocket, and leave it running. Nobody will be able to put the vehicle into gear without the key fob inside the vehicle :) Did this a while back on the wife's Edge and on my Mustang just because of the number of carjackings that seem to be happening at gas stations due to the close proximity of the key fob to the vehicle.
