Broken trim piece

So I'm pretty pissed. This piece failed out of the blue about a month after taking delivery. I know it's not something we could've done because it's not in a location to hit a garage door, etc. Even if it was, I haven't slammed my back hatch into anything.

I messaged the dealer with pictures the day I noticed it. It's taken 5 weeks to get three replies out of them. Ultimately today they told me that they'd have to replace the whole rear window for $700. The vehicle is under warranty...this is not a scratch, or dent, this is a piece of plastic that cracked and broke. I'm livid, I've never had to pay that much to repair something on a junker much less a brand new car under warranty.

Anyone else ever heard of this piece failing? Any suggestions to not be stuck with a ridiculous bill?

My must say I agree with Nick, that was hit by something. Should be covered under your comprehensive policy.

I can see your guys point of view, but if either of you have a 2015/16 Edge take a look at this piece, this location seems like it would be near impossible to be hit by something, and even if I did ram my hatch into the garage door it wouldn't hit there.

It's my first new car, first warranty, I guess I just expected to be treated a little more like a human being. I understand that dents and scratches and such aren't covered, but this, to me is much different. By denying it, I feel as though they think I did it and are essentially calling me a liar. It's just disappointing.

Regardless of whether these will crack a la 2002-2004 Explorer back hatches, or if this is just a fluke, they should stand behind the product. An "I'm sorry sir, here's a loaner, we'll have this fixed up in a couple days" should've been the response as opposed to "Thank you for your $45,000 purchase, now screw you, it'll be another $700."

Ultimately I guess I'm just furthering my education about how the world really works. At least the comprehensive deductible is only $250...

I was thinking of kid throwing a rock or brick, something simular.

I have a 2015 Sport that is plagued with quality control/fitment issues, my dealership has been amazing. I've replaced all 3 tail lights, new steering wheel....seems like it was in for something else also. Though none of my manufacturer defects looks like I took a hammer to the car.

Also, the "response" you wanted was a dream. Nobody in their right mind would say that after seeing the damaged piece. That's like buying a dinner set and break a plate and returning it and saying it's defective.

It doesn't matter whether YOUg hit it or not - the point is based on the damage SOMETHING hit it. A ball, a rock, etc. Intent or who actually did it isn't the point - the point is it's probably not a manufacturing defect.

I know, that's why I said to file it as a comprehensive claim. Cost will be the deductible.

No wonder I had problems. The damn picture is sideways...

It took me at least 4 attempts to find the damage that is the subject of this post...

I agree. That clearly looks like incidental damage. No one is pointing fingers, but, that will need to be an insurance claim.

Had it been a manufacturing defect. I would have expected the entire trim piece to fall out, fracture at a seam, etc.

That just looks like impact damage.

Yes, it sucks (I know, I just replaced a windshield, so I am sympathetic to the fact you have to grab your ankles).
